Wattage 182 Conversion
Well bought a Wattage Cessna 182 scale park flyer and going to mount a trusty OS .10 FP brand new, after reading all the
Conversion out there the Cessna should be interesting. Hope to take it to Small Steps in honor of Randy Randolph.

RE: Wattage 182 Conversion
Yea, somebody finally is doing a conversion the right way. I can't understand why someone would convert a gas model to electric. Seams like downgrading to me. I'm working on one that I think I might put a .15 in.

RE: Wattage 182 Conversion
I could never find an in cowl muffler that didnt stick out so I went back to plan A and made it electric with the MPI Geared Brushless. Flew great, touch and goes were nice on a slight breeze down the runway. Take off can be exciting if you get crosswind. All in all a very nice scale park flyer.

RE: Wattage 182 Conversion
Why convert a Glow to an electric?
Let me count the reasons.
1:Come to field put plane together and fly. (as opposed to put plane together fuel plane start engine fiddle with the needle valves and hope it doesn't quit running when your taking off)
2: No fine tuning, plug in and go.
3: Almost never a dead stick landing.
4: Noise is way down.
5: Much easier on my back as I don't have to get up and down to start the engine.
6: With today's brush less motors most conversions from glow to electric out perform the glow version.
Disadvantage of electric powered big planes. Cost. Batteries are expensive as are the speed controls and motors.
I converted a Herr Little something extra to electric and have no regrets.

Be aware that when converting electric to glow that things need to be beefed up to keep things from shaking apart from engine vibration.

I think that might be too much motor!
The W. 182 didn't appear to be the sturdiest airplane I've flown.

RE: Wattage 182 Conversion
Hi, I understand that there will always be a debate on which is better gas or electric. So far, the only benefit I can see is that electric is cleaner. I thought at one time that I wanted to try electric as well, then I started pricing the brushless motors, speed controls, Li-Po batteries ect. What I found was in order to get comparable performance to glow, I would have to spend a lot more money. I have not had many problems with glow engines being unreliable, or really had to fiddle with them much after the initial break in. As for the noise, that's part of the draw to me, especially when you get to the 4-strokes.

Electric is more expensive and the more name brand equipment you use the higher the cost.
182 - $99.00
GWS Recever - $29.00
CC ESC - #35.00
MPI Brushless mtr and GB assy - $79.95
Dualsky 3SP 2250 Lipo - $69.00
Jr 241 servo (2ea ) - $32./ea
Jr 284 Digital (1ea) - $34.00/ea
Prop - Graupner 8x6 $5.00
Total - $414.95
Thats not counting the field box, the lipo charger, tools for (props, wings and struts and wheels)
Glow comparison
182 - $99.00
GWS Receiver - $29.00
MPI Mtr and GB assy - $79.96
OS 10 FP (they dont make this one anymore how much $$ would you put down for that )
custom Muffler $20.00
Servos - JR 241 2ea $64.00
Wing Servo JR 285 $34.00
Props - Graupner 7x4 $3.50
Total - $329.46 Not including the motor.
Go figure.

These are the areas that I'm concerned with, the Tower catalogue has an OS La .10 for $54.99, and a fuel tank is about $8.00. So combined, those still don't add up to the cost of the brushless mtr alone. I don't know much about electrics, but I'm assuming that Li-Po's and brushless motors are required to have comparable performance to glow? Do you get longer then a 5-7 minute flight time?

Oh heck yeah you get longer than 7 minutes, try 15 minutes with power to spare. that combo I had was not drawing that 2250 down even close to the cut off voltage. But you pay for it $$$ ...what burns up battery is 3D and high alpha manuvers. Hovering or practising torque rolls can eat up battery but still even so that lowered my time down to 10 or 12 minutes.
hope that helps.

RE: Wattage 182 Conversion
Well, I finally received the fuselage I ordered. Because the kit was discontinued, I bought the wing, and a bunch of parts off eBay, but needed a Fuselage. Now I can see what you mean by it being flimsy. I think I'll use this as an opportunity to learn a little about electrics, and save my small motors for something more robust. Now I just need to make a horizontal stabilizer, because the one from the kit was destroyed along with the original fuselage. Would it be possible to get someone to trace the one off their plane, and scan it for me? I tried blowing up a 3 view to match the elevator, but I couldn't get it to match.
Thanks,
Pat
