Another Coholic Geared .049 Twin Runs....
Hi guys,
I finished and ran one of [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_1199286/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm]Andrew's geared .049 twins[/link] yesterday. It was built pretty much according to his plans using two of the stock SureStart production engines (with the choke tubes and intake screens removed). The only departure from Andrew's plans was that I used Loctite 609 retaining compound to attatch the gear and prop driver to the shaft (instead of silver solder and a set screw). With about three 1 oz. tanks of fuel through it, it seems to be holding up well.
It will turn a MA 8 x 4 at almost 11,200 RPM fully peaked (on Omega 5% with added castor) but does seem much happier around 10,500 RPM.
I have no immediate plans to fly it as it was built mostly for the coolness factor, but will most likely lighten the prop carrier and engine mount with some nice contouring as shown in my post to the original thread. (In my haste to get it running, I elected to skip that step.)
It was a leisurely one day build (including making the fixtures to hold the gears for machining) and the most time consuming part for me was getting the bearing preload "just right".
Anyway, here are a few pictures for your enjoyment.

PBJ, another great project. What's next for you? I'm still working on the ML Midge 049. The crank case is almost done, and shaft is finished. Now, I need to get to the cylinder and pistons. It's amazing how much you learn by doing one of these projects.

RE: Another Coholic Geared .049 Twin Runs....
Hey thanks for all the compliments guys! I'm sorry I haven't been able to answer your questions sooner, but I've had a few house guests for the last couple of days.
I don't know - I've just been using black moly grease on 'em when they look a little dry, but I wonder if chainsaw bar & chain oil would work better since it has additives to make it "clingy"?
Well... the funny thing is that I actually completed another engine since I did Midge and the NGEZ-1 - it's not 1/2 A, nor is it even an aircraft engine, so I didn't post it here on RCU. If ya'll are interested and if the "powers-to-be" will let me, I could post a pic.... As far as what's next - jeesh, I dunno. I'm still wanting to do a "real twin", but with summer almost here, my shop time is very limited.
I'm proud to say that I made 'em all by myself - however, I'm not happy with the way the knurling turned out on the prop driver. Thank goodness it's hidden behind the prop most of the time!
Just as a side note, I ran the twin on some Morgan 15% nitro fuel and it was much, much happier. The overall RPMs didn't pick up much, but the needle setting was rock solid and the engines didn't falter for the whole tank. Will have to take CP's suggestion and try an 8x3...
Anyway, here's a "classy" photo of the twin that I really like...

combatpigg - Is there a particular grease that works best with the gears?
SERCEFLYER - What's next for you?
meowy84 - Where did you pick up the spinner and the thrust 'thingie' behind the prop?

ptulmer: I notice your exhaust slits line up perfectly. Mine NEVER do. Did you shim the cylinders or something?
meowy84: Anyways a bbbbeeeautiful job!
FOD MAN: do both cylinders fire at the same time or do they alternate?

Combatpigg, I'll see what I can sneak in...
BuzzardsFly, I think I'll be able to do that... All I should have to do is remove the propshaft retaining screw, pull out the shaft, and re-clock the engines. It'll be an interesting test.

OK, the first photo shows two compression ignition engines that I built - the one on the right is the M.L. Midge that SERCEFLYER talks about, and the other is "sort of" my own design - the NGEZ-1. (More on the NGEZ-1 can be found on my homepage.) The other photo is of a "hit-&-miss" farm type engine that was designed by Hamilton Upshur and built by me (the "non-aircraft" engine that I spoke of earlier).
Enjoy!

OH! You're THAT Joe! You've made some really nice plans for the NGEZ-1. Don't be shy about posting a link to your homepage!

Combat, speaking of Facel Vegas, the pillarless 4-door design made the sedan versions twist like a pretzel on rough roads. The torquey American V8 engines didn't help the torsional stiffness any either. On another note I remember this one time and this hole-in the-wall bar.....LOL

Chris:
I never heard of a four door Facel-Vega. The HK-500 and the Facel II were both two door cars. I had two Facellia F2s, both 1961 models. They were two door also.

William, it was called the Facel Vega Excellence and featured suicide doors. Was very flexy and wasn't very popular and was dropped from the line-up.

Totally new to me, Chris.
Lancia had their "Appia" sedan that was also a pillarless four door, similar to your car here. A lot "Boxier" though.

joe, i love your engines ... milled aluminium is so sexy when its left alone ... polishing and anodizing ruins the look
and about the facels ...... The 1956 model was updated with a bigger (5.4 L) Chrysler engine and updated transmission and other mechanicals; in the same year, a 4-door model with rear hinged doors (suicide doors) at the back and no center pillar was also produced. Its pillarless design unfortunately made it less rigid and the handling was thus poorer than the 2-door, and they are rare.
VVVVVVVVVVVV look realy closely VVVVVVVVV

William, hmmm, you got me there. I never heard of the Appia. Was it in any way based on the 1950s Aurelia? In re. the 4 door Facel, only 230 examples were apparently made, so while not super rare (a la Bugatti Royale or Ferrari GTO, or others) it was nevertheless not very common as far as Facels go.

Near as I remember I paid about $25 for the Appia I had. Bought it with a bad clutch. The engine was a very narrow angle Vee four, with a single aluminum head covering all four cylinders. One cam on each side of the engine operating the valves in hemi chambers with push rods set up similar to the BMW 328/Bristol six cylinder engine. Nice car, but even more gutless than your grandma's roller skates.

Chris:
Bought an Abarth Monomille Sedan for $40 with no problem other than a blown head gasket.
Took it to VIR and went racing with it two weeks later.
Before the EPA, DOT, and collectors ruined things for us there were always exotic cars available for reasonable prices. Paid $4800 for a two year old Ferrari 250GT SWB in 1964. One of my really expensive car purchases. Then, $4800 would buy a top line Cad with change left over. New Chevvies might go for as much as $1500.

*sigh* William, I was unfortunately born a few decades too late to get such deals. *sigh* Why did I have to be born so good looking instead of rich. LOL
