Rrag:

Pretty much the same thing, but this one was cast in the back yard.

DARREN, these guys were smart enough to know way back when that one way to get the most rpm was to bolt the engine to metal, something solid. It also served the purpose of being as compact a package as you could get, and durable for those who like to fly over asphalt. They might be adaptable to 1/2A RC speed, but they might be over kill for us. I'm getting as much RPM with my NEW ENGLAND ROCK MAPLE mounts as the pan mounted GZs are getting with similar props, [for the most part, haven't compared notes with every living soul who has a pan mounted GZ]. I've only watched C/L SPEED, and I'll tell you what, there are some VERY BRAINY guys that are into that sport! If you aren't carefull, that sport can make a guy look pretty stupid too!

Piggy:

The metal pan was also a major psrt of the engine's cooling. When you brought the plane back after a flight you always picked it up by the wing. The pan wouldn't burn you, but after a good flight it was not comfortable to hold.

A bigger one, but this one was commercial, produced by Harters.

There used to be a number of companies that cast speed pans in either aluminum or magnesium alloy, including Harter's, and Tatone. Personaly, although I fly control line, as well as anything else, I think an 049 speed ship whould probably have me sizzy enough to fall over before I made enugh laps for an official timing. These things fly FAST!
