Default New flying buddy!

Took my 4yr old son with me this evening to get a quick couple of flights as the sunset. In the past he has shown very little interest in RC planes. I would only expect this from a boy his age. They are still very much into weeds and bugs and could care less about whats flying over head. Well tonight something kicked in with him and he was really into it. He asked a million questions as I prepped the plane, and even helped fuel it up. He did what I asked as far as safety goes, and had a blast. He started calling the shots with " do another circle, or loop dad"... it was good fun. I had a horrible time trying to get the plane going.. which I will bring up in another thread. So on the second flight the engine quit on launch and nosed in braking the wing off. My son was bumbed-out and said "only one flight was boring"... I told him we will fix it up this week and give it another try. That got a smile. Then all the way home he tried to tell me how the engine worked. The "fire was inside"... the glow plug was the "lid"... and I was "driving" it with the starter... he's a pretty bright one if I can say so.

That is amazing! I guess it is never too early to get started, look at CHIP HYDE. I would rather get a youngun' a G2 simulator than a NINTENDO game, that's for sure.

I feel your joy brother! My son has been my flying buddy since he was 6mo old now at 6 yrs he is starting to hang out with his friends and leave ol dad behind. He still likes to invite his friends over to launch rockets or build "contraptions" on his bench. He learned to count by launching rockets. I get a big kick out of taking him into a hobby shop with a sim and letting him fly, blowing away the owners.

Here is his plane, its a world models Super Stunts with a Saito .65.

Good Job spending time with your kids![sm=thumbup.gif]

That's a great story about your kid -- a friend of mine makes a comment which is so true, "A kid is the best toy a man can ever have". I can't agree more.

Andrew- That is so true... and I totally get to be kid again because of this little guy!

Vicman- Your kid sure has the sweet plane! Rockets are a good idea.. I'm sure my boy would love that! I have one stored away somewhere that I use to launch with my Nephew. We put a huge shute on it made from a garbage bag...[8D] We had to get in the car to go get the thing. If there would have been a thermal around it would have been gone...!

Combatpigg- I was pretty shocked by his interest... It was what just a month ago or so that I tried to get him to watch you fly that GZ Delta?? and he had no interest at all. He is already good with the computer. Sometimes he plays with MS Flight Sim 2004. He likes to crash more that anything....[:-]

Kick the tires and light the fire. Here is HIS own designed rocket car. He also painted it. The thing went like stink and was a total hoot. Here are a few other projects we have done. Foam is a wonderful thing.

Andrew, in regards to your comment "...a friend of mine makes a comment which is so true, "A kid is the best toy a man can ever have"..." I think your friend took those words right out of Michael Jackson's mouth. *poking you with a funny stick*

All joking aside, my 5 1/2 yeard old isn't quite into airplanes yet (could it be because I haven't built one and went flying with him? duh!) but we've launched a few rockets and lots of fireworks and he definitely gets a real kick out of those. He's a little annoyed at the loud shriek of the Cox engine though.

Guys,

Talking about rockets, the Hobby Lobby (craft one not the hobby one) by my house has all their rocket stuff on sale for 50% off. A whole RTF setup for like $12 with the launcher, etc. Just a heads up.

Vicman - I'm gonna "borrow" that wing idea. Talked to my wife and youngin(the pit crew) the other day, he was "flying" things around the house... Oh, boy. here we go, again.

Vicman-

Did you and your boy have to guide that rocket car somehow or did you just let it rip? Pretty cool that he came up with that on his own.

Scudrunner,

Like the bottom of the post says "Bigger, Badder, Meaner, Faster".[sm=spinnyeyes.gif] We just set her down on the street and let her rip. If I knew how to post a vid you guys would all have heart attacks laughing at how cool it was.

CW, He had a lot more fun working on the wings than he did wearing them after running around the house with them "these things kinda get in the way" The inspiration obviously was Buzz Lightyear and they were fastened with good ol duct tape. Or were you talking about the Flash ears? Now those were too cool.

Our baby boy is growing up (sniff...). Here he is with Maxey Hester and his beginner CL stunt 1st place plaque. Can't believe that I was carrying him around in one arm, not very long ago.

Well we made it out again as promised. Put a different servo in the wing and fired up the Big Mig. It would run from just a few seconds to a few minutes, and when it quite running it would stop very abruptly. It was not leaning out and would fire right back up, so I figured there must be some crud in the needle valve. I took the needle off and blew through the pressure line to the tank and got a nice stream of fuel out through the threaded hole for the needle. Fired it back up and like magic we were back in business. I'm getting the hang of launching this thing. A left handed under hand shove was kinda difficult at first, but figured out if you don't try so hard you have less of a chance of screwing things up.[:-] It pretty much just flys out of my hands.

Here's a picture of my boy!

Got out this weekend with my son and nephew. We flew rockets, my 11 yr old nephew flew my Slow Stick (did pretty good too), and I gave him a 1/2a demo with my combat wing. He liked it... I know this has nothing to do with 1/2a, but one of the rockets (green one) drops 4 plastic "bombs" out of it when the parachute comes out. I could not believe that they all landed within a 20' area from 500+ feet up! Some were almost touching each other on the ground.... The little rocket goes to 2000', it takes a while to find it.

Revver Brother 41.5 and I have been launching rockets for some time. They are a blast[sm=bananahead.gif]. He is building them all by himself lately, yea I'm kinda proud of him.[8D] I must also give a big thanks to Propbuster, he gave all his older rocket stuff to Spencer last year. We are still burning some of the 100+ engines he gave us[sm=thumbup.gif][sm=biggrin.gif]! Spence also has put the box of spare nose cones, body tubes and engine mounts to good use on this car he designed and built. If you pm me with a regular e-mail addy I can send you som vids of the car in action...very cool.

Wow! 100 engines... I just blew $35 for a dozen launches. [:@] Looks like you boy scored a good deal there... They are fun, and great for the kids cause they can do just about all of it themselves. I'll send you my email.. I've always wondered what other possibilities lie in these engines. My son was looking at a rocket that has a glider that rides piggy back... I bet an RC version could be done. That would be neat.

How bout these for boost gliders. The shuttle has yet to fly, the Arora is too cool for school! The glider circles the booster and lands at the same time within 15'![8D] Also I must mention the shuttle was a donation from clubmate and fellow RCU member Khodges, Thanks Ken. Here is another pic of the car, yes sir we like our rockets around the revver shack.

As soon as I get your addy I will send you the vids.

Those all look pretty good. I had a space shuttle when I was a kid. Just the shuttle though not with the rockets and fuel tank. It was my favorite.... It would always turn into a vertical dive and when you thought it was a gonner the shute would pop. And then one day it did not pop...well it did. Just in a real bad way! Does the Space Ship One glide down like the read deal? My email should be on the way now... I got called to dinner earlier...three times

If it works right the shuttle should glide back in a gentle turn. If it doesn't work right there won't be anything gentle going on.
