Default Cox 0.049 old type reeds

Hi
I still have some old type Baby Bees with the old "star" shaped reed. The one that was held in with a circlip. Are the reeds from the present day 0.049 Cox motors compatable with these, i.e. can I replace my old reeds with the new type "oval shaped" reeds?

Thanks
Richard

Richard,
I dont think the new shape works to well with the metal clip type backplates, you will need to cut new reeds from shim brass. I have heard that floppy disk can also be used, havent tried it yet myself.

The clear mylar reeds work great as a replacement for the old copper ones. Dunno about the newest stainless steel ones though.

Hello Richard,

The floppy disc material seems to work. I have been using it since I found out about it and have not had a problem but, I have only been running my engine's in the 18-20000 rpm level. I use the current metal reed as a template and and cut around it with and Xacto knife.

Try it it's cheap.

Hi
Thanks for the feedback. I'll go with the floppy disk material. I see its a similar thickness to original mylar reeds. PLUS I was talking to our Chief Electronics engineer telling him I was looking for some floppy disks for the material and his replywas " oh so you're looking for mylar". So it seems the floppy disk material is not far off.

Made some last night and they seem to seal well.

thanks
Richard

the newer rectangular shaped reeds make more power than the old cross shaped ones. in many floppy disc cases there is a small 1" square wiper made of thicker mylar that works great for this. easier shape to cut too...
