Default Batteries? receiver?

My first 1/2a Nitro. I have a Norvel .049 engine. Plane: Lil-Bug by "Stangel". I have no micro receiver or battery yet. The Hi tec 555 flight pack just seems, would be too heavy. If I use the GWS receiver and some 9 gram servos for rudder, elev, throttle, and maybe a 18 gram for ailerons.
Other ideas???

What about the battery?
NiCad 270 mah seems heavy?

do all receivers like 4.6 to 6.0 volts?

Then the special charger.

If only there was 48 hours per day...
Colby

Default RE: Batteries? receiver?

I have built control line .049. many of them.

This will be my third RC plane.
My son is an excellent pilot and promises me more time on the buddy box.
I built a "piece-o-cake" for him, with a .061 norvel. But he likes it more now that I put a .15 on it!!!

He flies an "ultra stick 40" w/ os .46 and can fly his all his stunts inverted.

any help on batteries would be apreciated...

I used a 600mah square nimh pack to get my Lil Bug to balance without any lead. The 600 nimh cells are about the same size as the 270 nicads. From what I had heard the Lil Bugs turn out nose heavy with the stock fuse length and a black widow engine. Planning on the heavier Norvel .049 for power, I went ahead and trimmed an inch off the nose of the fuselage in hope of being able to balance it without any additional weight. I used 5 gram servos for the throttle, rudder, and elevator and a 9 gram one for the ailerons. With a Hitec HFS-05 receiver, my plane ended up weighing 14 oz RTF. It is a fun little plane to fly.

There's nothing wrong with the 555 reciever but if the servos it comes with are just mini's then the overall weight may be more than you want. I'd suggest 400 mah Nimh pack. Good duration and light weight. Or go for smaller pack but get two and switch after 3 or 4 flights just to be sure.

I can't find any pics of this model. What's it look like?

the GWS reciever is not a full range item and I hear it sometimes gets glitched due to being single conversion. It may be fine for a small model flown in close but if you want to try a glider later on you won't be able to safely use it at longer range like when thermal hunting.

Colby, the 5 for $20 deal from servocity is also Hitec batteries. The last link is a great price for Nimh batteries, but the BEC connector is a motor connector, right? Just need to change the connector.

edit: oh yeah, just use the wall wart charger till you get a quick charger capable of the Nimh's.

Just to add to what Ptulmer said. If you have a 270mAh NiMH pack it will charge on your regular 50mA wall wart in 5 to 6 hours.

I've used the Hitec 555/HS81/270mAh NiCad flight packs in lots of planes. The 270mAh packs last several flights without recharging. I have a few GWS receivers and they do glitch occasionally, especially when other transmitters are one, so I keep them in slower electric planes.

Nice modles in your "hanger"!!!
I see you are using Hitec 555 w/ Norvel .061 and .074...

I "leaned out" all my old coxs when I was a kid.

I bought a .049 RC norvel Just because it was in the local hobby store...
Guess I could save the most weight with servos...
I will move the wings if I have to for balance...

Thanks for all help and battery help.

Default RE: Batteries? receiver?

I built mine using a 7 channel DC, FM receiver, two channels. Has a black widow type power plant, and a home built "air alert". Weight around 16oz, with the 650mh AAA bats. Can be built lighter, but followed the directions and flys good, nice snap rolls. Pict in my models.
