Default What small engines are left?

It seems each week brings news of another small, under .10, engine not available.
What is left to order and get in 2 weeks?

On another thread. The VA is no more.
Why the hel# is it, just as a size is starting a comeback, 1/2 or smaller ,ALL the dam motors start belling up.

Has anybody tried the Irvine .46 ducted fan motor ?

I am not sure which is worse. Living in the unrealistic past or getting with the present.

In 5 years there should be 5 places to buy the same items.

Oh, how I look foward to that piece of progress.

The crappy old days were the good old days.

I sound just like every old generation before me.

I am finished ranting about something I have no control over.

I noticed that Norvel has taken the catalog link off of their main page and Shopatron no longer lists Norvel. Great Hobbies still has the Norvel .049, .061 and .074 in stock though.

I am losing it. SIG Manufacturing now stocks Norvel engines.

I'm pretty serious into jets, and I have never, ever heard of anybody using the Irvine 46 DF. I don't have one myself, but rest asssured, I would RUN away from that engine, if it was worth anything, people would be using it.

Don't worry I believe the Norvel .061's will be around for awhile. If I remember right they are only dropping the .049's.Norvel also has the .074 which is really a .10 in a smaller package. On the high end there is the Cyclon 1/2a's as well as the Fora and the new Profi 1/2a engines. I believe you can still get the H&R Fox .049(not sure but I think it's the FAI model). There is the grossly underpowered OK Cub .049's still on the market. Brokad came out with their .049 within the last year, it's an unthrottled control line engine. Made by CS but some of the reviews I saw showed that it may be a good running engine. I see today on the Brodak website they have a .061 and a .15 listed so they must be in the works too. AP has a couple engines also but again they are heavy and underpowered for their class. Cox and PAW still have engine while Cox is dropping alot of their stuff there still is alot of it NIB out there. To bad Jett is not making this little number[]

The thunder tiger gp-07 still exists.. and the mp-jet .061 is still available from carlsonengineimports.net, he's got the paw too. I think some small makers do batches and maybe the new popularity of these sizes wiped out the inventory quicker than anticipated.

A small brushless using a lipo is a competitive, clean source of thrust for a small model, and I can see the temptation---except for one thing- there's no ENGINE!! may as well play a video game

I can't help but think that NORVEL is holding back so they can jack the price a significant amount. I wonder if there is any rpm potential in the FOX .049s? I won't even ask about the OK CUB , that is such a wimpy sounding name, there couldn't be much happenin' there .

CP,

I wondered the same thing. Just look at the price of the AME .049/.061 on the SIG site something in the hood' of $80.

Hopefully there won't be too many takers at $80! You can get a lot more for your money if you want to go up in size a little, a nice .15 is still around $60. Most of us have too much stuff to play with to be worried anyway. Happy 2006, TIM!

Everything on the SIG site is much higher than street. I think that they are trying to encourage people to purchase from the LHS, rather than direct.

Now that you mention it, SIG is priced high on everything. I don't recall EVER buying anything direct from SIG.

Their parts are reasonable, just not the whole item, which is what makes me think it is to support the LHS, and reduce shipping hassles. SIG's service is excellent though.

Positively correct. Sig is the opposite of Tower, Sig WANTS to protect the LHS. Order Sig stuff from your LHS, that's what sig WANTS you to do. A great company, Sig. No reason to beleive Norvel prices are going up.

The Jett 049 thing, they have been teasing people with that at shows since the mid-90s, it's not a production engine, and never will be.

The OK Cub, well...I have one that will keep up with any comparable single-bypass Cox! But not a Norvel or Tee Dee...

The Fox is another forty year old engine, built up from NOS parts, it's not a "performer" by today's standards.

The Toki 05 is also available.

Get a 15 instead of a 1/2a engine? They are not the same thing. Not at all. Why not get a 60 instead of the 15, while you are at it?

The Brodak engines are specifically tuned and ported for Control Line, not for us.

PAW factory prices are higher than the LHS, but we have sooo many LHS shutting up here in UK, some DO diversify into selling BB guns, foamies, ARTF and plastic models, but I think they are delaying the inevitable. I have been looking at small electric motors for powering 1/2A models and hit too much information as regards ESC, LiPo and brushless, geared and direct [&o]

Has anybody run a larger Norvell and what did you find compared to others that are known.

I ask, as I will probably have to buy 4 of something in the .15 to + .25 range.

C2, the reviews are really mixed on the NORVEL .15 and .25. The guys in the RC combat forum discuss all the plusses and minuses in detail. The only unanamous opinion is that they are lighter than any other engine in the same class. I think you'll get plenty of input from the COMBAT and ENGINE forums, including little tricks to bypass the quirks that these engines seem to have. If I were to get involved with a 4 engine project, I think OS would be my choice for consistent and matched power. The .15 LA is a little screamer.

If you are doing a four engined bomber, can I HIGHLY recommend the wonderfully reliable Saito 30? Done several twins with that, NEVER had a dead-stick. And the SOUND, oh, the sound...
