Default 1/2 A powered by Cyclon

I use to try to fly control line combat many years ago with TDs and they would blow up everytime they got running good. So I got burned out and quit. Then a new generation of engines started coming out a few years ago and I bought some cyclon engines that are made in Russia. These engines are great. They make a lot of power and are very reliable. Also easy to start. Well last week I built some RC flying wing type planes for my cyclon and went flying down by the beach in Mexico. My buddy and I had all kinds of fun flying our cyclon planes until the sun went down.

:rainfro: Yep,it sure was fun flying my Baby Birdie down in mexico!no one to bother us,our planes fit in the car,and it took only a few minutes to be next to the beach having Lobster Dinner!!!!That Plane used to have a tee dee on it,but it sure turned up the performance with the cyclon .050 on it.

Default 1/2a Heaven.....

Wow!

Nice pictures guy's. Cyclons are reputed to be one of the, if not THE best, engines available anywhere. And quality is never cheap. At $140.00 to $160.00 a copy there won't be too many 1/2a er's bellying up to the bar. Out of all the racers in our club, I can only name four out of 22 that might pop for one. The Cyclon is very popular in the control line combat arena today. It's interesting to note however that the VA engine in the capable hands of Larry Driskill won 1/2a combat at the nats. I asked him how he accomplished such a feat. He told me that the VA is half again as light as the Cyclon (1.6 vs 2.8 oz.) and that allowed him to turn inside of the heavier ships. He says he is getting close to the same power out of the VA as the cyclon. Larry sells the VA's for $70.00. I have five of these beauty's and they have served me well. But. I'd have no objections if santa slipped one of them Cyclon's in my stocking this year!
You guy's should build a couple of racers for them Cyclons and start a new fad in calif! Here's a pic. of my racers.... Best Rgds, Jeff........

Default racers

those racers are cool. What airfoil are you using? Are they foam core or built up?I bet they would really scream with a cyclon on there. If you are interested in a cyclon,Pornstar is going to be putting an order in the next couple weeks.

Default Pornstar is back

Wow.. hate to hear about bad weather unless its snow and I can be in the mountains snow boarding. Yeah I am a control line junkie and know a little bit about the combat world. Larry Driskill is an excellent modler and really has his va's working well. I have found those engines to be a little fragile. Its kinda hard to compare engines fromt he Nats competition. Many of the big name pilots weren't there because of the World Champs or for other reasons. Yeah the cyclon is a little more expensive. I notice that the control line guys don't seem to mind spending a little extra money to be competitive. They buy $265 nelsons to be competitive in fast combat and import $225 to $250 engines for FAI combat and $120 to $150 engines for 1/2a.

Hey!

I could be interested in a Cyclon, details?

The racers in the pics use the MH33 airfoil. The taper wing is a foam core, and the straight wing is built up. I built that wing kinda like the Dominator 200 wing is built. Man, is it ever strong! It survived several crashes that wiped out the fuse. I'll be building some new stuff for next year and will be trying the 6063 airfoil. It's a 6% foil while the MH33 is 7.23%. It might be a little faster.

If the lube in the fuel isn't right the VA's will wear out the wrist pin carrier pretty quickly. I now use 75% castor, and 25% Klotz 200 and that has solved the longevity problem for me. I have just retired an engine for a new piston and sleeve, That engine had over 80 runs on it this summer before it got tired. I run 'em pretty hard. I launch at 29-30,000 they really sound cool!....If people only knew how much fun they racers are. A lot more guy's would be doing it! Good Luck.......Jeff....

Default cyclon racers

I would like to build something similar to the planes you are building. They just look fast!I have a couple cyclons that are 3 years old and have hundreds of runs on them. The only problem i had was a rod went bad,but i think it was from trying to re-start it in a combat match with an electric starter and it was flooded.Other than that, they seem to run for a long time.I think the cost on the engines will be 150 each.He is going to put the order in a few days I think,so maybe send him an email.I know you will love them.I ran a norvel a few years back and the cyclon blows it away.It needles like a large engine and makes killer HP.We are running ours on pressure bladders. They hold a constant needle the whole flight. We are running glass and carbon props on them also,so on the right plane i am sure it would be alot faster than what they go now, which is pretty fast.Would you be able to send the airfoils for the planes you built? We would cut them out of foam.Do you sheet the wing with balsa?Do you use any carbon under the sheeting?

Default Racer Info

Fishnfool,

Sure, be happy to help you with a racer. What kind of foil file would you like? I can send you the coordinates for the foils or I can send you a foil that is sized per your spec's. ie. root measurement, tip measurement, offset for leading edge & trailing edge, and sheeting allowance. I can masage the foil to your spec's and send you a finished file. Also, If you would like I'll give you the fuse detail. Obtw, I sheet my wings with 1/16" balsa. I use a spar at 30% made of 1/8" verticle grain balsa sheeted on both sides with 1/64" ply. Very stiff and light. Our club rules dictate a 200 sq. in wing minimum so that's what mine are. These racers will finish between 11.0 and 12.5 oz. with the VA's. You could still come in around 13 oz. with the Cyclon!

I'm curious about the class and carbon fiber props you run. What size are they? Where do you get them? What kind of Rpm's do you see? If you would like, feel free to email me direct @ [email protected] Rgds, Jeff.....

ok,we are using bladders for fuel.if you are interested, here is the email. We are going to put in an order in the next week or so.it is [email protected] that is the guy in the picture with the plane with his name on it.he can tell you more or less when he is going to order and how long they take to get here from russia. They are really awesome and they run like a big engine. You don`t have to fight them to get them started or to get a good needle.

Default cyclon engines

Hi guys.. hey Jeff.. those are some really cool looking racers. FishnFool has that racer that you see the pictures of and it sounds so cool. He has a glass prop on there and it sounds like a mini pylon racer. Neatest thing I have heard in a long time. I just started flying RC so I have been building home made flying wings similar to the planes I use in control line combat and similar to the Zaggi that I learned to fly on. I am running the cyclons because in my eyes.. or unless your Larry Driskill .. the cyclon is the only way to go. They are very durable. I have probably sold about 75 of them to the control line guys. The only thing that usually goes out is the rod because people use electric starters on them and wear them down. Every once in a while I see something else go bad, but not too often. I have been running a 6x4 plastic prop on mine until I got jealous of fishingnfool and all the noise he was making so I put a glass prop on my plane.. and it was going so fast.. that I had to hand the box over to fishnfool because it was getting out of hand. My flaps were going crazy.. luckly I only had a little bit of fuel. My foam plaes are coming in around 260 to 270 grams ready to fly.. which i just a little under 10 oz. We are talking about making some of our 1/2 a racing planes with a fuselage. Right now were just trying to figure out what airfoil to use.
I am putting in an order for engines. They usually cost about $200 with shipping and wire exchange when you buy just one, but I am able to get the price down to $150. That includes shipping to me, wire exchange fee, and then shipping to your door. There is a side exhaust version which is real popular in control combat because it keeps the exhaust off your wing and there is also a rear exhaust which would probably work just fine if you were using an upright type mount.
check out the picture of my Liddle Falcon... its a smaller version of what Lee Liddle is using to tear it up in Texas in RC combat
