If you're already a good pilot, go to "kittingittogether", Larry Driskills' web site. His LITEHAWK plane is exactly what you need.

Get a TD, some 4.2x4 props and build a "Blink". You won't need control lines, but you will need good reflexes.

Young pilot, you've got 39 posts listed. Have you flown an airplane before and if so then what sort of airplane? And how many flights do you have on it and how comfy are you at making the plane do what you want rather than letting it do what it wants? How often can you land it within 50 feet of yourself when you arrive with enough altitude.

Ah, cool then. So you've done the flat foamie electric thing and now it's time to feel the Need For Speed?

Most 1/2A models are not usually all that fast with 40 to 60 mph being more or less a natural speed for a basic 049 to 061 turning a 6x3. But if you go for a sleeker model running a hotter engine with a smaller diameter and higher pitch then 80 to 100 is doable. But you gotta get one of the fancy engines and play with it to get the best performance.

For example a bit of quick figuring for prop pitch speeds.

3 inch pitch at 16K gives 45 mph
3 inch pitch at 20K gives 57 mph
4 inch pitch at 20K gives 75 mph
4 inch pitch at 27K gives 102 mph

But generally even a slippery model will have enough drag that you only ever see maybe 80 to 85% at best of this pitch speed. So figure you gotta turn a 4 inch pitch prop at 30K to get a peak at 100 mph.

It's doable with a sub 0.10 engine but it's not easy. I hate to push you away from enjoying the smaller side of engine flying but the mid size engines offer more options for reaching 100 mph more easily. Unless the idea is to keep the models smaller then you are stuck with 1/2A.

Also bear in mind that smaller models SEEM like they are fast but the smaller size that demands they be flown closer in to the pilot often makes them seem far faster than they are. It's quite possible that the model you saw was only doing 60 to 80 mph and that your models that you thought were doing 50 were actually only doing 30 to 40 mph except when in a dive where they could push up to 50'ish.

How about a good used TD .051[ for about $20 from an auction site] mounted to a scratch built Sheet Wing Racer? With a COX 5x3 prop at 25,000 rpm, you'll fullfill your need for speed and have a chance to get the plane sorted out at a manageable speed. Then switch to an APC 4.2x4 prop to shift it into over drive. Once you have had success with this set up, then it would be time to move up to the CYCLON .061 on basically the same model. Start all over again with the 5x3 prop, then switch to the 4 pitched prop once you are "at home" with the extra power.

Huh, RTF? That's what happens immediately after you build something, but right before you fly, right?
