Default rainedav's contest design

I really didn't feel like doing anything scale because it's just too much work. For me, anyway. Lately I've taken an interest in classic pattern planes, but instead of making a miniature version of an old classic I got the idea to shrink down a design based on the current 2m Widebodies. It's not really a replica of a specific plane, I just sort of "borrowed" the look of a few different ones. It has a 35" span and was drawn around a TD .051 although I think I'll end up putting a throttled .061 in it by the time it's ready to fly.

The fuse will be built on a crutch/ladder with 1 5/8" x 1/8" sheet sides than run from the firewall to the end of the fin. Formers will go on the top and bottom with three 1/8" stringers and then be sheeted. The nose will be carved from 1/4" sheet. Tail will be built up for lightness.

The wing is a basic D-tube sheeted to the two basswood spars. The trailing edge will be hollow sheeted, too, and cap strips will go between. I haven't drawn in the ailerons yet. The root rib is the NACA0012 that morphs to a NACA0015 at the tips with 1 degree of washout.

Here are some screen shots from TurboCAD 4.1. And I hate TurboCAD 4.1. It's nine year old software that doesn't run well in XP. I have to save, close and re-start it every five minutes to clear out the bugs. But, hey, it was free.

I am glad someone is building this type of plane. Pattern planes just look cool.
