Default Das Wunder

In a never ending quest to see how many ways there are to build a DNU (hats off to Ptulmer!) here is my addition.

I have always wanted to try a Sig Wonder but I never had the required kit, engine, or the plans... But, after looking at guys flipping fuselages and such, I thought I saw a similarity between it and the DNU, and I could maybe make a facsimile with stuff I had on hand.

Same wing (clipped), formers etc. Fuse shortened and Horiz Stab enlarged and a third (optional) throttle servo added.

I have just started cutting wood so any suggestions / improvements would be very much appreciated.

Span 25"
Length 19"
Wing 160 sq in
Weight 11-12 oz estimated
Power 049 - 061

I would imgine something that short coupled would need the cg no more back than 1/2 way between leading edge and the main spar, It'ed be a good starting point to aim for. Even at that point its going to be pitch sensitive.

Dude, if you do that up in the traditional red baron colors, that thing will draw some serious attention at the field!

I think in order to balance, you'll have to mount the aileron servo in the wing, and the elevator servo behind the aft bulkhead under the stab. Also use the smallest, lightest servo you can for the throttle up near the 2nd bulkhead. That will leave a lot of room to shift the battery and reciver around for balance. That is basically the way I'm having to mount the radio in my Sig Wonder.

Just something to think about.

DF --

Wunderbar!!

Man, I wish I had been smart enough to think of that. It should be a really hot performer.

Thinking about PT -- he should take us all out for a beer for making him so famous.

I know, but it was worth a shot. When he gets inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame, we can say we helped him prototype his designs.

You're in for some excitement with that one. I love the DNU look you're giving it. Here's a scaled down Wonder I built a few years ago with a Norvel AME .061. 17.5" span, 8oz RTF with the fastest roll rates you ever saw.

VERY cool d/F! That puppy's really unique and should fly great. OK, who's going to do a canard?

Wow Bipe that's small! We shoulda talked!

What can you tell us about speed, glide, pitch control, etc? Did you put a throttle on it?

PT, Yes I decided to start on this one too. That makes 3 partially completed and two more on paper, and one on the bench for repair. Its getting to be a full time job.

Pitch sensitivity wasn't bad at all, but the CG range was very narrow. Yes it had a throttle, no it had no glide. Basically when the engine made sounds of running out of fuel, I would line it up with the runway, cut the engine and make a very straight approach. I lost it showing off. I climbed straight vertical to about 100' while doing fast rolls, put it into a dive full throttle doing even faster rolls. Tried to pull out at about 25', but I didn't have a hope of knowing which way was up and splat! The engine was completely buried and I never found the spinner. I still have the wing. It's one panel from an ACE wing set.

If you think that one was small, check out this flying nightmare. That's an .010 up front.

Anyway, I shouldn't be taking your thread off track. The size you're building is a much more sane choice. It should be a nicer flying plane.

Is Bipe Flyers scaled down Wonder a new definition of a 50% scale model? To use Bob Wischer's definition, we don't fly model aircraft, they are all real aircraft since all aircraft fly by the same basic laws of aerodynamics.

How long until we see Bipe Flyer in the Scale Masters with his 50% scale Wonder

Hey, great idea hogflyer! A scale event where all the planes are scaled down 1/2A versions of existing kits.

Well, here's the wood. I figure there has been enough DNU build pics, I thought I would spare you. Awwww.... but ain't she cute? Weight so far 3.5 oz.

I am short on white 'kote presently and my LHS isn't very local. About 2.5 hrs away to be exact. So, it may be a day or so before I get it covered.

Looking very nice. With that distance from your LHS aren't you better off just going online and ordering from one of the mail order stores?

Keep the updates coming

Well, I may be a little prejudiced, but it looks perfect to me! When that little guy starts buzzing the field at speeds it doesn't look like it should be capable of, it will get some double-takes.

Looks great, DF! I'm gonna have to look up where you live! Sounds to me like a hobby store would do OK in your town if there's any population to support it. That plane reminds me of the layout of the first coroplast combat planes I ever saw, they flew pretty good considering how much that stuff weighs.........well, they flew, anyway. At this stage, your plane is pretty light, it's going to be a ton of fun when it's done.

I really like the oval twin fins. I like them much more than the "Wonder's" fins.

Good job!
