I have just ordered a tiny pb 033 diesel engine. I would like to instal it into either a tiny learner plane or good looking mini glider (ideally without a top engine pod).

I would appreciate any advice as this is all a bit new to me. If you have any links for suitable kits / manufacturers I'd be greatful....

Also some pointers on which micro radio gear would be handy

Thanks. They both look like the style I'm after, however they are a touch too large. I'd prefer something 40" or so max, so it's easier to transport and better suited to my tiny engine.

Micro the problem is this size in glow/gas/diesel isnt that popular so no carbon fiber....this size is mostly electric so its mostly foam and balsa....Rog

I don't have a PAW. It's a pb 033.

I built a plane years ago, but never flew it. It was a symetrical wing with zero dyhedral, for an OS10. I'd probably have crashed it if I tried!

Spirit of Yesteryear makes a number of laser cut kits for small scale old timers, which should make real sweet (and relaxed!) flyers on the diesel.

However, they seem to all be a little over 40" in span, i.e. 1/2A size. What about making a 2-piece wing? Not hard to do, just a little improvisation is required.

An airplane that comes to mind from my yesteryear is the Tomboy. IIRC there are two versions, a 44" or so and a smaller 36" one. I think you can get the plans from Bob Holman plans service, and I am pretty sure the one plan shows the 36 and 44" versions. It's a classic cutie, very basic in layout, and flys like a champ. I think you need a model of about 36" in size for that motor. Unless it's a bipe of course, then smaller.. ;-)

Small diesels are fun. I have a Pfeffer .036 (I think it's .036, maybe .033 or .03 - no documentation came with it) I picked up at Toledo somewhere in the later '80's.

I only ordered it yesterday, after researching the options for 48 hours! When I read about the histroy and craftmanship that goes into it, I just HAD to own one. When I placed my order and payment was processed, I was given the opportunity to add a comment on the forum / feedback section of the pb site - mine's the latest one - Paul.




(P.S it's more like a Zenith El Primero, in fact. Rolex buy in a de-tuned and lowered spec of the El Primero movement, even on their top Daytona model. Rolex is more about the label, than pushing the frontiers tbh).

If you don't mind building from plans there's lots of options avaiable for downloading. Some may require a little bit of modifying to suit the engine if they are originally intended for electric or similar but the sky is the limit for types of designs. Check out the sticky thread for Free Plans Links in the Scratch Building forum area. Another good source of small and simple plans that could be adapted is www.smallflyingarts.com and www.theplanpage.com .

I'm putting the finishing touches on a smaller and very basic to build powered glider that you may be interested in. It's in CAD so if you like I could send you a scaled sized to suit your .033 engine. Right now it's 60 inch span but it would be easy to scale it down to around 40 inches for you.

As for radio gear for an engine of this size I think it's safe to say that the smaller and lighter the better. Just be sure to get on of the more expensive full range micro recievers.

At this stage I want to look at all the options before I make a decision. I may in fact get two models; an ARF trainer to get going quickly plus a really nice kit which I can spend ages building, ready for the next stage.

I agree either plane should be slightly retro, or t least very plain looking. A plain white powered glider would be nice, as would a real retro plane.

Don't worry, I won't be putting it in a day-glo thing covered with graphics!

I know what you mean about clear dope on some retro balsa. I built a tiny freeflight exactly like this many years ago. I even had a cox 010 ready to go in but I never got around to flight.

I've now spent two days looking for a model online. I think I'll get an ARF for now as my spare time is very limited for the next year (buying a house to do up). I'll probably buy a proper kit for next year. Anyway, for now this looks like the best one: 4 channel, 38", simple scale good looks, probably all in white with no colour at all.... whay do you think?....

I think I've just found the perfect thing for my little pb engine. It's retro, ARF and very lightweight.... StarLITE. My only concern is it's only 3 channel. I wanted to learn on a full 4 channel really.
