Default Cox Sure Start .049 vs Brodak .049?

I´m curious how the cheap little Cox Sure Start .049 compares power-wise to the Brodak/CS .049? It´s obvious that the Brodak is nicer in some ways with the beam mount and muffler, but I´m curious on how the they compare purely performance wise. They will be used in some 1/2A C/L stunt profile trainers (Stunt Chimps).

Erik,

The Brodak/CS .049 is equal or less than a Cox Reed valve engine. So a search here for "CS".

I think the CS would be a good choice for C/L stunt, it is a very steady engine. What do those plane typically weigh? I will guess that you could build a nice one to weigh less than 7 ozs.?

And the Surestart can be upgraded with galbreath heads and nelson plugs. (TD cylinders, etc) They are the better deal 'fer sure.

With the Sure Start, If you disassemble the backplate, drill the venturi out 11/64th's then you will find that it really performs. I am using a stock head along with stock everthing else and my last tach reading was 17,000 rpm with a cox 5x3. It is giving more rpm now after I sorted the compression out with head shims, but I can't find my tach. From memory it was giving 15,500-16,000 rpm before the mod. Not too bad for a $7.00 engine.
