Don’t look at this ! ! !
I’m telling you, exit now ! ! !
OK, don't say I didn't warn you.
I have been flying (and loving) my 8 ¼-inch span (!), $30 Aero Ace biplanes. This experience has given me new faith that I can now handle a REAL rudder-only, vintage-type model airplane. I haven’t decided which one to start with but I expect it may be powered by a TD .010 or TD .020. Anyway, I got to looking through the various plans lists for little ole models and I was really surprised at how many there were. Yes, only a couple would probably make a good first RO ship (and I probably couldn’t find an actual plan to build from anyway) but I thought some of you more mature guys might get a nostalgic twinge for the following:
Littlest Stick, Leastie Beastie, School Boy, Handful (I snuck that one in there ‘cuz I like Lazy Bees too), Guided Mite, Mini Mono, Pocket Rocket, Lil Swell, Lil Roughneck, Roaring 20, Dick’s Dream, Ebenezer (ff but fun to convert I bet), Page boy, Mini Most, and Wee Wonder (whew, pant, pant, let me catch my breath).
I will likely scratch-up something based on the ‘standard’ numbers but I enjoyed digging up the above list anyway.
So, the reason you shouldn’t have looked at this post was that I would like to throw down the gauntlet and challenge youse-all to add to the list of smaller-than-049 powered models. Oh, I forgot Bug's Ear (the littlest scimitar). C’mon gray-beards, you can do it!

Raymond,
Someplace around here I have the first copy of the RCM plans book which has a ton of 1/2a R/O plans in it just waiting to be scaned and load to Tile Print. If you find some thing 1/2 a from the "Old Days of RCM" let me know what you're lookin for and I'll see if I can fix you up.
If I get time I'll make up a list and post it.

Mini Mono is aileron and elevator so it doesn't fit in that list if you're on for Rudder Only.
You missed the Skampy. One of the slickest looking little RO models around.

The Cupcake I don't know at all. Any pics of this thing?
One I have just been eying that would probably be just right is a plan in the Jun. 1972 of American Aircraft Modeler called the So-Long. This was a then updated old timer from 1940 originally designed by Bill Englehardt. The original might be found on htp://www.theplanpage.com but as yet I have not gone to check. Still there are a ton of freeflights and rc models that if you were to resize them would turn some heads.
Here is a pic of the AAM version of the .020 FF So-Long. The actual plan may be still available for this.

OOOOOh! AAAAAAAHHHHHH! Bruce that just reeeks character and pizazz.
BF, thanks for the peek at the cupcake.. figures you would be familiar since it is a biplane. those wings sure are close together... wonder how good it flew like that and i wonder if it would perform better if there were a little more room between the upper and lower planes.
Now that Cannonshot! The profile looks so much like the Cupcake....Yet the difference is staggeringly more beautiful, IMHO. I am a sucker for wing area and the Cannonshot seems to have it in bucketloads. I like a lot!

Flyswatter just built one that was meant to be .02 RO, but he added an elevator. It looked like a glider with a pod on top. Too bad I can't remember what the name is for sure. I think it was the "mombo" or something like that? It had nice elliptical wingtips. It was WAY too windy, so maybe next weekend!

Well here's my weekend project. I'm building this one as per the plan "R/O".. Getting old makes ya think funny doesn't it...
I went through the RCM plan book and there's 52 plans for 1/2 a. They start from Oct. 1963. I post a list later tonight.
Take care,
Rick

Rick, you still finding homes for your beam mount sure starts? I haven't had the guts to actually mount mine on an airplane. It had your first venturi version and puts out about the same as a regular surestart plus about 400-500 extra rpm. It is sitting in my collection at the moment, cause I'm afraid I might crash it. I do enjoy it! Every time I walk by, it gets picked up and played with.

It was called a Nomad. Originally kitted by House of Balsa about 50 years ago. pt is right, it was meant to be rudder only but with so much space in the fuse - I went ahead and put in elevator control. I got the plans off the 'bay'. It went together in less than two weeks - gw of 11 oz. If the winds will ever get low enough, I will start up the little 020 and "push" it into the air.

PT.
Haven't built any for sometime now. I put 10 of them together and have one left. There easy to sell or trade. I sold one to a speed flyer in Cleveland and he was pretty impressed with the performance he got out of it. When I get over this lazy spell I'm going through, retired young, (sorta) I will more than likely build another 10.
When cox gets some more sure starts I need to get a couple just in-case I get a burst of energy.
Glad you like yours, everyone I show them to wants one.

What about the Page Boy, .010 R/O, 16" span. Repro kits are available from earlyrcmodels.com. They also have the Schoolgirl, Schoolboy etc., the Lightning Bug, some others.
Wasn't it Ken Willard who converted a 13" span Guillows or whoever's SE-5 to .010 and R/C? Can't recall if it was R/O or 2 channel.
