Default Sure Starts out of stock?

HI
I was looking around at the Cox site and noticed the sure start 049's are out of stock. Does anyone know if this it, or will they have more later on. I was afraid, that where they were so cheap Cox might have been, God forbid, discontinuing them.

I would also like to ask if there are some sites I could visit to learn about tuning, modifying & maintaining the 049.

Thanks for reading
Sean

Click on Classic Propellers. They're listing a bunch of the old black nylons.

I have just connected now and placed an order for some SureStarts. They have a new look to the website. Plenty of Sure Starts available, but I didn't see any of the product engines (Surestarts without the snorkel/choke tube).

The Surestart is a better buy anyhow, the product engine doesn't have a starter spring.

Where did you find these? Every page I've found shows the Sure Start as Out of Stock.

The new site is currently a little wonky, I think. Give it a day or two and it will probably be more stable.

You are quite right, they are currently out of stock.

I didn't click on the Sure Start picture, just clicked on add to basket and it happily allowed me to order them without mentioning anything about being out of stock. Oh well............

Luke, the last time I ordered they were out of stock. When they did ship, I got one instead of seven. I called and they offered to ship the other six for 6.99 plus shipping & handling. After they called me a liar. I said "no thanks".[:'(]

There are some pages that haven't had content added yet and they are using the home page as a placeholder for these pages. The site is a work in progress. They should be building it on a development server instead of going live half way through the project.

If you mouse over Classic Engines and look in the bottom left corner of your browser you'll see that the menu item links to http://www.coxmodels.com/default.asp# which takes you to the home page.
Now, mouse over Classic Propellers and it links to http://www.coxmodels.com/products.asp?dept=89
In the address field in your browser, change the 89 to 86 and you'll see the empty Classic Engines page that I assume will eventually get content and be linked to from the menu.

It's not considered professional practice to build new web sites on live servers.

Hi Guys
I got this e-mail from COX today:

Sean
Sorry to inform you that the .049 engines will not be restocked any time soon. Cox currently is not manufacturing engines. A couple of years down the road, Cox may entertain the idea, but not presently

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news , on a happier note , maybe I'll pick up a TD .09 Do you think it will tow a 30oz 72" span glider?
Oh yea , have a fuel question.. Is the Norvel fuel ok to run or does it need Castor?

Thanks again

That is the crappiest thing I have heard in a long time. I mean so what happens when someone goes out and buys a new HyperViper and cracks it up real bad and needs a new engine? I guess they are S.O.L huh? While I love my Cox engines, every last one of them, as a company Estes/Cox sucks the big one. Whatever I guess screw them as much as I hate to say it my Norvels run better anyways.

Later,
Tim

That's odd, I just recieved an email from them telling me the Sure Starts will be back in stock by the 7th of July, would I like to proceed with the order.

Tim, perhaps if you phoned them and see what their deal is , news from the horses mouth is better than a glib email. I would do it myself but I am in Australia. Not cost effective.

Hi Guys, Better news today,

I spoke with James at COX today and he said there would be some more shure starts for sale around jul 7th but after that they would no longer be selling them. He also said the sure starts aren't being manufactured but assembled from NOS parts. The Product motors WILL still be for sale but not listed on the website. I asked if we could call and get them and he said that would be fine. Oh yea If you want a product motor with a spring starter you'd have to specifically ask for it.

Sorry about the e-mail I posted from Cox yesterday, I should've called first.

Well................the product engine is a Sure Start without the spring and choke tube, but why not list them on the website ? I think they are an excellent engine for what they are, dirt cheap 049s and Cox finally sorted out the porting after all these years as compared to the original single port jobs. Shame about the Sure Start line ending though, the only Cox reedie I have ever been able to start by finger choking instead of exhaust priming .

I would seriously hate to see the Cox engine line fade away, they are my favorite out of all the 049s I have played with and are long lived with the usual care. I have had Babe Bees given to me, rescued them from being thrown out and picked up occasional cheapies from garage sales (trick, simply say to the seller "How do I know if it even works?", guaranteed to knock the price down to five or ten bucks) . I think I own fifty of them all up, I have never counted them. Hopefully Cox will survive this latest cull of their engines .

I think the overall goal of cox trimming its product line down, is if they get to the point where they have NO products, they can cut staffing costs considerably.

I agree luke,
The cox 049's were my first engines, the first magical rush of starting it up yourself (i was 9 or 10 I think). It would be a shame for the line to disappear.

Here's an update re the Sure Starts which I recieved from Cox via email.

" Luke,
The .049 engine hasn’t been produce for many years. The current stock of sure starts was depleted about a month ago. There are enough spares to assembly what will amount to a last run of sure starts for at least the next couple of years."

So, that news aint too bad. Similar to the reply Luma recieved but we have at least a couple of years to stock up should we choose to.

A few weeks ago I ordered a couple of shurestarts at Cox, together with the spares I needed, and they put them into backorder. I hope I get them at last....
What really worries me is that they also put the piston & cylinder set for my PeeWee .020 on backorder. Are they running out of parts for this engine?
