Default 3D fliers-Glow conversion

Everyone is doing electric conversions so we did a glow conversion. Yeti 33 from Billy Hell RC and a Norvel .074. The only mod was to make an engine mount- 1/4" hardwood rails and a little 1/32" ply and its good to go. I had about 100 flights on it before it ran out of fuel in hover about 10' over runway. I just have to find time to fix her up a little (couple of hours) so I can get back to the fun. Here is a video from about the fifth flight - first flight when there was no wind.

Hope that works

Not many. Even fewer deal in ARF's. Don't get me wrong, you did a nice job! Just not quite what folks are used to here. Out of the thousands of 1/2a plans, I can only think of one made to 3D. Then there was Dickeybird's "Cornbread". A built-up pizza box style.

Thanks, at least I get a reply. Stirring up things a bit is why I'm here- not a troll, just having fun.
It is a kit BTW- I'm just an awesome builder![8D]

If we could get a decent geared setup for the 1/2A, to swing the big lumber, there would be more 3D.
But while 25k electrics get 4-7 geared down ratios for 10 to 12" shallow props, there is just so much thrust you can get from a 5" at a quarter million rpm. If we could get a 20k+ SureStart geared 3 or 4 down for an orange 10x4.7

Sorry, I did ASSume didn't I. That's because of the small pictures and the decals on the wings. Nice build also!

I imagine alot of people watched the video and enjoyed it. But aside from the Norvel .074, it's very difficult to get enough thrust out of a 1/2a engine to 3D, then you gotta deal with getting it to throttle well. You can see why it doesn't attract alot of that kind of attention.

[link=http://www.geocities.com/matchlessaero/]Matchless Aero[/link] has a site with several 3D capable planes and some downloadable plans. Matchless posts here occasionally (he used to post quite frequently until he started breathing too many burned electrons )

Matchless was one of the people who got me into thinking about this small glow stuff. He is an awesome pilot and designer. My buddy has an Edgling from Matchless that he bashed into a Yak.074 power. If anyone gets a chance check out the video contest that Matchless (and I) were recently in on the Profile Brotherhood site.

If you guys could make a planetary gear box that could handle some of the shock and vibration from the piston cycle, you could have some awesome 3-D 1/2A planes. If you can get the motor to run in reverse, you could run a simple belt drive (the flexible belt would absorb some of the vibration). Sounds like a challenge for someone with machining capability....

Belt drives are not new and were commercially available from Byrons some years back. But, power trains consume power just thru transmission friction and when the overall power output is limited, you may find yourself worse off than without a transmission.
