Something really different!!!
I han across this 1/2 A model and thought it so unusual that I wanted to share the images with the group.
The model is called XB-9. This of course is because it has 9 Babe Bee motors on it. What an undertaking it must have been.
Of course it is control line but I wondered if it might bring either discussion or more?
I know the closest thing I can think of would be the electric flying wing Helios. Or possibly the Spruce Goose It did have 8 motors come to think of it.
Anyway, Here for your approval, The XB-9

Hmmm, looks interesting, but good luck getting 9 Babe Bees to start at the same time... I had enough trouble with two trying to do some control line combat a few years ago.

Looks like they did, though. Wow.
I think a better name mightd have been "The Swarm" or "The Hive".
Think of all the cut fingers. Or the fun if 4 or 5 of the inboard engines cut out first.
No thanks!
Talk about seemingly narcotic influence on design - some of my favorite 1/2A stuff is the plethora of weird .010-.049 designs I used to see in the old Aeromodeller annuals, wish I still had those books but they got burned up with all my other stuff in a house fire years ago. One day I'll find copies I guess.

Neat model. I have quite often wondered how many sure-starts it would take to fly a man carrying ultralight, maybe Cox would sponsor me!

RE: Something really different!!!
Just cover the entire leading edge with SureStarts every 6" on a 30' span ultralight, and another row of Pod engines hung like the old ford TriMotor
While 100 surestarts may seem excessive, it is still cheaper than a Rotax

MJD, I know what you mean. I have a small pile of older magazines and this popped out of one of them. I have seen several multicylinder cox engines in Radial geared, inline and opposed. Some even took ad space in the magazines because they actually had them for sale. If there is some interest seeing these I will be glad to share them.
I am glad you like this one and I have to agree that Swarm or Hive would have been more like it! I bet it sounded like no other at the time.

MJD,
Speaking of the old Aeromodelers reminds me of the wild stuff that Ray Malmstrom did which reminds me of the Ebenezer which brings me to this. . .

Come to think of it, there are some offbeat Diddle Bugs out there too.
P.S. I wonder if the editorial staff will censor this? I will obey, I will obey.

Hmm.. I was just thinking that the XB-9 plane is some sort of crazy "torture by frustration" example cooked up by some psych ops doctor!

Only two .049s, but the man who taught me to solo designed this one. He was also responsible for getting me involved in 1/2a r/c and FF. I'm forever indebted to him.
