What's going on with COX?
I have been hearing alot of talk about COX going overseas, being bouight out, not making engines anymore/still making engines and it's getting a little confusing. I made this topic as a place to talk only about whatever is happening to this company.

I suspect that Cox is history. If it exists it does so, it's only on paper in some lawyers desk drawer or some corprate office somewhere.
The best advice I can offer is to buy all the glowheads you can find.
HTH - Steve B.
PS The engines themselves will be around for years to come in flyers boxes or swapmeets, but nothing new.

RE: What's going on with COX?
There does not seem to be to much stock left, I tired to purchase a "Cox 8901 .049 Sure Start Engine" two weeks ago and it was in stock when I ordered it ( but when my package it was back ordered); now all of the engines are out of stock. I was able to get the all my other parts (spring starter and glow plug) I needed for my .010 TD. Ever try to start a .010 with your finger ; it is my first engine; also made my first electrical starter for it a little Mitsubishi motor and some shrink tubing. I was also was trying to get a the Texaco Texaco Jr tank but that became unavailable when I placed my order. I think the Baby Bee tank is the same.
I think most of us have more Cox parts in are junk draw then Cox has. I just wish I did not pair down my stuff a decade ago

A good source for complete Cox engines is www.Selecthobbies.com This is a web store run by Steve Adams who also offers an exhaust throttle for the TD .010

RE: What's going on with COX?
Jason, contact Steve about it. I'm sure he does and you'll find he's a nice guy to work with.
What's up with Cox? Well, they were separated from the Estes mainstream to become a hobby business. Estes wants to get into the ARF/Electric business. (that probably means no Pica kits) The sale of the machinery wasn't really a big deal. It hadn't been fired up in decades. They were assembling engines from parts on hand. Parts that were kept in sealed drums full of oil. How much is left? That's probably less by the day. And not from sales, either. It would be more profitable to toss them and write it off as a loss than to sell bits and pieces to a niche market. It was old technology and wasn't in demand anymore.

RE: What's going on with COX?
This link will let you know what Cox is up to.
http://www.coxmodels.com/Aboutus.asp
What comes of it? Who knows. Past 10 year history says "NOT MUCH"!!
Myself, I am hoping for good things to come as I have been a fan since I bought my first Cox plane in the 60's.
Have near 100 now and a load of engines. Its an addiction.

RE: What's going on with COX?
glowhead,
That page is very much a joke! Cox is all but done with the 1/2a side of their business. They are selling or have sold off all of their remaining stock of 1/8a,1/4a and 1/2a engines and parts. They are not making anything new for our side of the sport. They are becoming an electric and ARF company just like everyone else. They say they are "returning to their roots" I call BS on that. They sold their engine machining equipment to the CS company in CHINA last year[:@]
LAter,
Tim

RE: What's going on with COX?
I kind of figured the "returning to their roots" was BS.
I did notice that most of the pages were inactive on the site.
The last parts order I place at Estes/Cox was about a year ago and not much was available then anyway.
I have a good stash of spares so I won't have to worry for a while.
The quality of products coming out of China is getting better all the time.
Maybe they will do some good with the tooling.

RE: What's going on with COX?
cp, I do love the electrics and they have their place.
It makes me shudder to think that the equipment will be put to use making anything else but Cox engines. I am hoping that these machines will be put to use cloning that which we crave. True they won't be a U.S. product if they do, but if they were to start making them and offereing them cheaper than what is now available it will be a boon to our hobby. Yes I realise the sacrifice to our national economy but that choice was made by Cox long before I make this statment.
As it stands, they can do with the machines whatever they want to do. Making cheaper brushless motors or even military usage. I don't know...

It's encouraging to hear that the Chinese have the tooling.

Andrew, maybe so.......but at least the stuff isn't getting melted down and turned into belt buckles. It will be interesting to see if anything comes of the acquisition of the COX machinery. I am curious about what they paid for all that stuff?

RE: What's going on with COX?
Hey, I bet that the Chinese people would produce it at a price that's far more competitive than latter-day Cox ever did. Mr. Cox would have been disappointed long ago. He was all about manufacturing and selling new, updated engines. Cox hasn't updated the line since long before I was BORN! Hopefully, they will learn something about porting and timing from the Cox engines. Seems like all the new engines on the market are built using empirical data from larger displacement lines. Not good. On the bright side, I've just polished off my eighth Bud, so I can fondle my Cox without being embarrassed.[X(]

I ran across this today. I know it has virtually nothing to do with the IC part of the Cox we know but They are activley promoting this venue! Hard to believe but true.

RE: What's going on with COX?
Certainly I did. It is possibly the sole reason for Cox having the sponsership. Surely they will have a booth showcasing the Micro Warbirds. Obviously they will have them availab/e for sale as well. Possibly at a reduced price or with some other incentive like a free hat with purchase or something.
What has my curiosity about this event is how will they treat their other products? In my mind it would be sensless to not have a full range of product to show and promote. I would love to be able to see this display myself and see if they have any of the Cox engines for sale... With the sale of the equipment was part of the deal to make engines and engine parts available to Cox?
These machines were special and like so many Mfg.s have opted for producing their products overseas It simply would not have worked without the specialised machinary to do so.
Will Cox have IC engines for sale there? Do they even consider the engines product these days?
Are they just biding their time for the production to get underway?
They way I see it this will not be so. Word would have leaked by now if this were the intention.
So sad.
