Default Latest Cox 049?

I saw this over on Stuka Stunt Forum, some of you may be interested in it.
Also, not 1/2A, but are any of you playing with these Picoo Z micro helicopters? Great fun flying in the lounge room. I've made up a paper MASH Bell 47 fuselage for mine........John

John, that is the state of the art now for sure start engines. Old pot metal cases that pre date the bar stock cases is what I've heard here. Unless they were bushed, it seems that they would wear out fast.

But for a source of glow heads and piston/rod/cylinders they are still worth the $6.99.

I wonder how long those cases will stand up to electric starters? And I'm referring to the Sullivan Hornet and Miller 1/2A types.

Oddly, in the order I received last week with 6 SureStarts they all have regular bar stock cases.

That crankcase was developed around 1978-1980 as a cheaper replacement for the bar stock. It did not pan out. Some with a similar case made with aluminum instead of zinc alloy was produced during that time with a big tank on it (for RC, I think). Thise were shiney cases while the zinc alloy ones were dull colored.

There WAS a cast aluminum case prior to the bar stock ones. They were used on the Space Bug, Thermal Hopper, Space Bug, Jr., etc. and were excellent engines. The first bar stock one was the Babe Bee.

The men in brown just delivered my six surestarts today. Sure enough, every one of them has the pot metal crankcase. I don't have a scale but they do feel a little heavier than a aluminum surestart. Are these crankcases really known to wear quicker than the barstock ones, or is that just what the expectation is? I was hoping to run these engines and not just use them as a source of parts for my other .049's. From what I have read cox has only once before produced a zinc case to reduce mfg. costs and abandoned the idea before releasing any of them. Is that correct? Can these engines be expected to last a reasonable amount of time if flown with a good oily fuel mixture?
Forgive me for being such a cox rookie, I flew 1/2A stuff when I was a kid 30yrs ago and am trying to get a few new C/L planes up and running now. I now usually fly R/C .60-1.50 glow and some small gassers, but it all started with .049 C/L long ago.

I have never seen one run and I don't believe the original prototypes were released. I have no idea if the project was abandoned because of wear or if cost savings was not as estimated. I would say to run them and see if they last. If not, it didn't set you back much...and perhaps you can use the parts in an old case.
