The only way I know how to tell is to remove the cylinder and count the transfer ports. Three ports is a AME.

You should post in the 1/2a section. You will get a quick accurate answer. I thought the Big Mig had 5.

I can never remember which is the more powerful one , but that is not it, they have a different muffler than that....it is a smaller reverse thrumphet muffler....Rog

Bob,

Take off the cylinder and count te intake ports only the AME has 3 and the BigMig has 5. If you see 4 ports total then it's an AME...3 intake and the exhaust port. The muffler shape has nothing to do with it.

LAter,
Tim

I think Rog was talking about the early Norvels. I've got three different muffler examples here from early AME's. As far as I can tell, the BigMig was only available in the last style like shown above and Tim's got it dead on how to ID which you have. Bob, sounds like you might be fairly new to 1/2a. Have you decided on an airframe? There are many differences between 1/2a and larger displacement engines. For one thing, prop size becomes more critical on a smaller engine. An AME is made to turn small props at high RPM. Definitely good for a small racer or speed plane! But it will turn up to a 6x3 at reasonable RPM. The best all-around prop I've found for just about any .049-.061 is the good ole' Cox 5x3 rubber ducky.
