.049-.15 Guillows Cessna SkyHawk 172 36" wing, Questions.
Hi, Im on the hunt for a Cessna SkyHawk or Skylane Kit or ARF that i could put a .10 in. Whould anyone happen to know anything about this kit. The wingspan is about right for what I like. Could this kit be easily completed for R/C flight? What are the Supplies i would need to do so? if its not to far out of my building skills.
I will put 5 or 7 gram micro servo's in it.
Here is a link to just a few specs and box art. http://www.rudystoys.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=802

Guillow's does not have recomendation for R/C conversion for this plane that I know of. Their included recomendation for free flight is for .049. For control line from .049-.15 engines.
Indeed some have been successfully converted to R/C but all I have seen were electric conversions.
I personally would not put an internal cobustion engine in this model larger than a Norvel .074 but that is just me. I have a feeling it would not be an enjoyable flying experiance for most people with a .10 or larger engine unless it were made Ucontrol.
Check out this thread for a video of an R/C Guillow's Skyhawk. Beautiful model and wonderful flying. It comes in at 10 ounces. If you can keep the all up weight at 10 ounces or under, even with a .10 you could very well have a winner.

Just my two cents, Robert

Build Light, I have no prior skill with converting kits like that to RC, Way out of my legue.. I think this .10 weighs 10oz on its own.
Bterry, Thanks for the sites, the World Models Skyline ARF is the way i think im gonna go.

I've built the Guillows Skyhawk as a display model years ago. I found it to have a couple of problems that would need to be over come to make it R/C:
1) There is no provisions for any kind of access to the interior, you would need to fabricate an access on it
2) The wing needs to be redesigned as there is no main spar. It is possible that the wing could just fold up on you
3) The landing gear would need to either be removed or beefed up. The kit supplied landing gear could barely hold the weight of the plane

If there is a guy out there who can build a 10 oz RC model that is powered by a .10, I'll fire HopSing and make this guy my new shop foreman........

Im getting Curious weather my little .10's will pull this. If their not to much for it. Im pritty sure they will. (I do know how to use a throttle) The airframe of this porter looks alittle weak looking, or maybe thats just normal in contrast to the size of it. Would it be worth attempting to build? If it is, how hard would it be to add ailerons to it?

None of the options you've listed are intended as being rugged and major mods to converto to a .10 glow would be needed for the model to survive anything more than gentle flying. Since you've already admitted that you're a little doubtful about your modifying skills it's probably best to steer clear of these display or rubber model or lighter electric motor options.

I need options here. I would like to build something Scale like that will handle my little 10, under 60 bucks for the kit. preferably 36" span or larger. Every option i have found doesnt have what it takes. maybe you guys have something better?

Well, the old Goldberg 1/2a Skylane, or the Jetco Cessna, Piper or Rearwin...
Midwest Jodel Bebe, oh yeah, these are all long gone...wanna scratch build?
Are any House of balsa WWII kits still around? They work better with 10's than .049's.
Current kits for scale planes for a .10 IS a tough one. Gordon Whitehead did some
nice ones for RCM and others.

Cobra, look at the House of Balsa P-51. I built one years ago for .15 combat, still have it. I just ordered the .25 sized one for a OS .32. If you fly off grass without gear, don't worry about the belly scoop, they will land just fine.

Jetco Mooney Mite? Herr Piper Cherokee? Herr Cessna 180 SkyWagon? Herr Aqua Star Seaplane kit with custom Landing gear? Would it be hard to add ailerons to the Cherokee or skywagon?
