Default Another Clancy Lady Bug

Ken,
What a great little airplane! I built a Lady Bug from Hobby People supplied plans with an all up weight of 10 oz. Mine has two FMA S80 servos, a SR Batteries 150mah battery pack, a Hitec HS55 servo, lots of balsa wood, Lavender Ultracoat transparent light, regular Ultracoat yellow, a Perfect metal ½ oz wedge tank, #3 heavy Trexler wheels, and my local Hobby Shop was able to supply a GWS 4 channel RX. I use a Norvell starter that is powered by a eight cell battery pack. I ran a 1/8" ID latex surgical tubing from the exhaust collector thru the wind shield, thru the fuselage and exiting the rear for no mess diesel flying. My PAW .03 r/c engine turns a MAS 6x4 at 12.8K rpm. How well does the "Fly Quiet" muffler work? I thought about an inverted engine but worried about picking up fod in the carb. Whats it like in real life? Please send a close up larger pic of your engine installation.

Looks nice Francis! How is the power/flying? I haven't tried mine yet.

I expect the Flyquiet tailpipe should work fine, it's 3/8" diameter, so I don't expect back pressure to be a problem.

I'll try to get a better shot of the motor in a week or so, but I'm up late packing...have to go to Germany tommorrow so I won't be able to get to it before that.

Ken,

It flys pretty good. I only have three flights on it though. The speed is a bit faster than you expect. Landings are a dream!
The recomended rudder and elevator throws are not enough for even normal control. I have aproxamitly the recomended right thrust and it is way to much. I wonder if small, low pitch, fast props need less right thrust that big, high pitch props?

Beautiful plane! I guess the one diesel I ever saw fly wasn't unique in the messy black residue, both these Lady Bug diesels have had exhaust pipes all the way to the tail.

For some reason my small diesels do not make a back mess. It is oily, but only honey to maple syrup colored. My Davis converted .46 is another story. I do not know why the difference. Just in case see this pic of an Amptique with 40" of pipe.

I ran an exhaust pipe like that in a Grob motorglider that I built for a friend. Do you find that you can now hear the exhaust and the prop as separate noises?

Your correct, a smaller prop produces less torque than a larger prop. The smaller the prop, the smaller the column of air flowing across and around the fuse. And of course, the larger the prop, the larger the colunm of air flowin across and around the fuse. This column of air is what causes the plane to pull to the left. It is a combination of the twisting of the prop and the column of air pushing the tail to the right that causes the left hand pull that we call torque. A real Sukhoi (sp?) pulls to the right instead of to the left, because the real engine rotates the other direction, causing the tail to be pushed to the left. I think the true term is "P FACTOR", but I'm not sure.

P-Factor is the correct term. I should know, I"m not only a modeler, I'm a FAA flight instructor, hehe!

By the Way, model airplane aviation is WAY better than
real aviation!

Francis,
Here is a closer picture of the engine. It's on the radial mount, right off the back of the engine. You can barely see where the exhaust goes through the firewall in the picture. It's tough to get much more of a picture since it's enclosed on 3 sides.

Running on ground, seems to run OK. I can't get it to hand start yet, but it's still pretty new, only a couple tanks of fuel through it. The exaust is pretty clear oil, not the black stuff others are describing.

I'm getting right around 12K RPM with the 6x3.5 prop. I also tried a smaller tube right at the end of the exhaust tube and it made it noticeably quieter without losing RPM's, so I'll probably play with that a little bit more still...

Don't know when I'll have a chance to try flying it though...!
