Can you tell me about this engine? pictures
Hi All. I just bought this engine from a guy that got it with a bunch of other stuff. I doesn't fly anything under 40 size he said he'd sell it to me. He said it was a novel .061 but I'm not real sure he knew much about it. It say 0.8 casted in the side of it.
Can anyone tell me about it?

The 0.8 marking is the displacement in cc, or .049 in. I agree with eroc about the performance, this engine set a new standard for low priced ½ A’s. The one in your photo appears to be ‘near new’, that is, it is very clean and shows no marks on the mounting lugs, so it might not be completely broken in. If so, there are a few caveats.
My first experience with the early .049 was a love/hate affair, (mostly due to my own ignorance). It started out as the most ornery, nasty, meanest $%^& that I ever dealt with and I have scars to prove it. The early Norvel ads stated that it would run on low nitro/FAI fuel. So I was hand starting it with 10% sport fuel and a regular ni-cad starting battery. All wrong! It needs 25 to 35% fuel and the early (pre Freedom plug) glow plugs need more juice than the 1.2 ni-cad can put out.
I say grab the engine if you can. Run it on 1/2A fuel, light the plug with a power panel and use a starter. After break-in, mine turned into a pu$$ycat.

I was told that it was never on a plane, but may have been run on the bench. If that is the case, is there a perfered way to break it in? After broke in, as far as performance, how does it compare to a TeeDee 049? Terry

Terry:
The TD is a no-show, there no comparison unless your comparing 20K to 26K. If you want 20K go for the TD if you want 26K go for the AME (60% nitro, 5.5-2 APC prop.). It's a little fussy though...
