Default Skydrill Build Thread

Received Steve Adams (skaliwag) Skydrill kit in the mail about a month back and now have the chance to start a building... Had a small sidetrip to Ireland on business for 3 weeks, but now I am ready.

Specs:
Wingspan- 32"
Wing Area: 185 sq. in.
Length: 26 3/16"
Weight: 12-14oz
Engine: .049-.061

Kits looks excellent: great laser cut wood, control horns provided, Sig strip aileron kit, and several other goodies. All that is really needed is to get a 5" canopy if needed.

Great looking model... It was derived from PT Ulmer's Kao-Tic design.

More details to come...

Brian

Here are some pics of Steve's finished model.

I plan on using a TD .049 for power, Electron 6 receiver, and HS-55 servos.

Hi Brian... Welcome back..
Wieght to beat is 12.6oz.. with an un-throttled TD (one less servo) this should not be a problem. Hang on for a real ride my friend.

Ah ha, competition for Sharkface I see. OK Brian, toss 'er in the air on the 29th and let's see what she'll do.

Well with school back in session (earlier bedtime) and cooler weather, I have a bit of a respite. Cleaned off the workbench and started by cuttin all the tabs on laser cut parts.

Also glued the elevator and rudder parts together. Hopefully tomorrow I can get started on the fuse and possibly the wing.

The laser cutting is great... always nice to have parts align with very little or no sanding.

Skaliwag - where did you get your canopy?

Probably make a trip to the hobby store this weekend to look for some carbon pushrods.

Pictures to come as more progress is made.

1/2A Forever!

I got my sky drill a few days ago also. Got the wing done and turned out real nice. Skaliwag sells the canopy. If I was aware I needed one I would have ordered one with the plane. I'm going to order some servo's from him so I'll get one then. If I remember correct, the wing with 1 HS-85 servo, no overing weighs in at 2 3/4 oz. I'm going with HS-55 servo's when they get here. I was thinking about using a paw .06 for power, but it might be too heavy. I do agree, its a very nice kit though, can't weight to fly it. I'm used to flying industrial strength, heavy duty planes so this one is going to be a real pleasure. I'll add pic's later. Terry

Brian and Terry.... are you doing a straight wing or with dihedral?

I put a little dihedral as the plans say, or would you do soemthing different? I think this is his site, http://selecthobbies.com/

The Jury is still out on the dihedral choice. I can't tell the difference myself. If you do use some, the 1/8th ply tougue at the front of wing has to be a taste higher.
BTW I have .060 C/F rod.

I am planning on not using any dihedral. If anything, I might put a slight bit in so the wing doesn't look like it has anhedral.

Thanks for the notes on the carbon rods (Terry / Steve). Terry I will PM you / Steve, I will check out your website for qty/cost.

Steve - what did you use for Tyvek for the hinges? FedEx envelope or similar?

One of the issues with dihedral on a plane like this is to get the plane to do axial rolls. Without dihedral on a low wing plane, the high thrust line can cause a wobbly roll.

All of the Kaos variants have dihedral. Even though the wings are flat across the top, the taper of the ribs creates dihedral. The Dirty Birdy was the (pattern) design in which Bridi introduced what I'd call true dihedral as the top of the wing is not flat across the span. All of the Kaos variants also have about 1/2° of positive incidence in the wing. I have no idea how they would fly at 0-0-0 and whether or not you could even notice a difference.

This is why I opted to build the wing upside down.. It is however 0-0-0.
Certainly true that the Skydrill is a Grandson of sorts to Joe's Kaos.

Well, I'm looking forward to flying Brian's on the 27th. With a TD he may wish he had a throttle, or at least a 1/2oz tank!

I'm looking forward also... Need as much feed back as I can get. Perhaps he should wear brown that day.... and be on low rates.

That's what it is all about.... go fast and turn left. Should be a good test of the Skydrill's capability.

Talked with Steve today... he was in the process of getting more Skydrill kits made since he was almost out of them.

Made decent progress today... worked with my 7 year old son Nathan on the fuselage - some cutting, grinding, and gluing. I finished the empennage.

Anxious to start on the wing tomorrow.

October 27 and counting...

Brian

Brian... Might want to put the 1/16th X 1/4 stiffeners on the fuse sides.. Stops the covering from dishing them in and backs up the bulkheads.
I like to put the hinge in place when the tail is pulled together also. My pref is the Goldberg #210 Jet Hinge. There's a lot of "Pull - Pull" at that point.

Steve,

Gotcha on the stiffeners... that will be the first thing done today.

Now back to the workshop,

Would this plane work well with a Black Widow tank setup? I've got a new one I'm dying to stick on something. Just worried that the engine would be prone to dying without a clunk-style tank and all that rolling action with those ailerons. My other small planes have no ailerons so they maintain positive g most of the time and I want to be able to do rolls with this one without those concerns.

You should get a roll out of the BW but not continued inverted flight.

Between watering the yard and moving the sprinkler every 10 minutes, here is what I accomplished. Oh the joys of planting grass seed in the Fall...

I bought this particular tank at a swap shop several years ago - neat clunk. On the side of the tank it states 25cc, which should be plenty.
