I played a pre 60's ebony Les Paul back in the late 60's before they had humbucking pickups and it was a dog and weighed a ton!. Couldn't get a clean sound... but then who wanted a clean sound in those days? I don't remember too many ebony Gibsons.

While this was not a tv version it is a bit better by my estimation. The tv version was just a little too uptight...

I'll always think of Michael Bloomfield as the hands down best guitarist of that whole era. One word: Soul. BTW, he recorded with the curly-haired guy holding the cat in my avatar.

Raindave, The one I played (drummer's deceased father's guitar) had 3 strange looking plastic pickups with external pole pieces). I didn't like it back then so I didn't pursue it. In the day, "Bloomfield and Butterfield" was a way of life for me Killin' Floor( Electric Flag) used to kick my *****. Then I flew my Lil' Jumpin Bean..

The comments on clean vs dirty raises another topic: the development of tube amps is probably the most fascinating and under-read chapter in the history of recorded music. I would argue that no other single piece of hardware played a greater role in the development of rock.
If you're in to the technical/mechanical side of things and like music you owe it to yourself to read up on the men who designed and built the tube amps of the '50s, '60s and '70s. Amps are every bit as much musical instruments as guitars are. This will get you started:
