A couple years ago I tried to find some 'carbon paper'...no luck.
Office Depot carries it and tracing paper.

Well, I scrapped the hollowed out solid cockpit idea and made it as per the plans, with the exception of using balsa instead of plastic for the windshield. Got the hatch/wing hold down together and sanded to shape as well.

Airframe complete with the exception of a beam type hardwood engine mount for the TD and maybe some cheek cowls. Not sure how to do the cowls, there's no real detail on them on the plans, only says "optional and materials not included". Still have some trim work to do, including finding a way to adhere the cool flames I've got Scotch taped to the turtledeck right now. Found a set of landing gear with pants from my old Cox Skylane and with a little scrubbing they look nice and a decent fit. Now to work on getting the TD mounted and radio gear. Thanks to you guys here, It looks like I'm going to be able to use some old small Cox servos I had laying around after some connector changes!

I glued up the tail feathers to the fuselage and installed the TD. I ended up making a plywood "tray" for an engine mount that I epoxied the firewall and the nose doublers on the sides. I still need to install the tank (1oz.) and then dry fit the radio gear to see where it's balancing out at. The newly ressurected Cox/Sanwa servo was retrofitted where the old full size Futaba was originally installed. Using the small Cox's will sure help out where weight is concerned.

Well, She's done for the most part! It still needs to be balanced, which looks like I will have to add weight to the nose[:@] I've got the battery and receiver under the fuel tank as far forward as I can get them, and the elevator servo as far as it would go forward too. I'm balancing it without the landing gear on so I guess I'll have to compensate for that weight loss forward of the CG. The aileron throws are way too much, but I have no way to compensate for that, as I'm using an old two channel Futaba radio and the old Cox servos. I'm thinking it's going to be a little twitchy in the air Flight report to follow if the rain ever stops here, wait, that means I'll have to get back to work[&:]

That's a neat airplane. Looks like it would be a handful for me, though. Let us know how it flies.

Well, after adding what seemed like a lot of weight in the nose under the engine, my worries were calmed when Eddie at the Post Office said 19oz!! One oz under the 20oz limit. Not bad considering I used Ultracote to cover it with. The use of the mini Cox servos definatley saved me on the total weight. Now to find the time to give it a toss[8D]

I ran across this thread this morning, and Just had to put my two cents in. I built an Up Start in the early 70's .It was more of a racer than I expected and A hand full to fly. At least that is what I remember.
I only had a few flights on it and trying to get control. It was coming across the runway and I gave it up to avoid getting hit; It was going full tilt and was upside down. Not much left to rebuild with.
I still have the plans . They are just 1/2 size drawings, and instructions on putting together. At least I saw them a year or two ago. I will think about pitting one together ; and use 5 gm servos and an electric motor. I went to the darkside several years ago after an afternoon running 0.49 for an 1/2A Texaco for SAM.
I have several foam wings in my shop.

If you report a post, even your own, one of us will take a look. Whispering the word "moderator" into the air doesn't make one of us appear like a house elf

I'm not sure what you're doing to get all that felgercarb to appear but to add a photo open a reply then click Go Advanced, Manage Attachments, Choose File
Then browse to the photo on your computer and click Open, then hit Upload.
The photo should appear as a thumbnail thus:

Talking

Thanks.

(To be precise: I have sent a mail to RCUniverse and confessed that I have messed up things on this thread.)

Anyway.

Let's give it a try.

Did it!

Looks like its working!

I'm not sure what you mean by "sent us an email"
Reporting a post notifies all the admins, someone reported yours this morning and i took care of it. I don't see any tickets/reported posts by you going back 2 months.

Anywho, seems like its solved so lets move on.

Glad to see a thread like this revived. Thanks to RCU for keeping these threads around. I can't tell you how many old threads I have commented on and suddenly there is a burst of activity.

The plans for the Upstart on outerzone.co.uk.

I just went through oz and found 50 zippy 1/2A contenders, planes with quick lines, or even purpose-designed for racing.

Upstart would be in the top 5 or 10 if we ranked them according to buildability/performance.

Cheers- Poughkeepsie Pete

My idea is to make some alterations, and build an Upstart 2.0.

What I have in mind:
- a tapered wing (7.3" root, 5.6" at the tip, some thing like that
- NACA 2414 at the root, NACA 3412 at the tip, with 1 degree washout
- barndoor type ailerons
- almost no dehidral
- of course a built-up wing
- less downthrust
- a Mega 16/15/4, 3S (4S???)

Something like that.
That will result in a better looking model, with approximately the same flying characteristics.
But even with the Cox, the thing performed quiet well (she was far to heavy, because of the thick layer of nitro-proof varnish . . . )
We'll see.
Something for the fall/winter.

Default Upstart Plans?

Hi All
I use to race a bit of 1/2 A's and was wondering if anyone has the Upstart plans on a pdf file to post here in the thread? I still have a couple of TD .049's that I would like to air out !
Thanks.

Yet another project that uses the Ace foam wing. There were a lot of different planes out there around that time. It is good to see the rib style built up plan for the wing as now there are no more wings available. I have two just in case. Funny how much things change even from 10 years ago with the radio weights and even powerplants now with the darkside electrics saving the weight of the extra servo and slime. A Norvel .06 would be great on this.

The straight wing is dead simple to build and doesn't really require much in the way of plans. I usually just take a sheet of freezer paper and scribe off a few parallel lines for the LE, spar and TE, then mark the rib locations with a tick mark. I've always thought the foam wing was a little thick (around 15% I believe) and would probably reduce that to 12 or 13%. I've always wondered if the thickness was designed for flight performance or simply to provide sufficient strength without spars.

I'll bet it would be a rocket if built lightly and with a NORVEL.
