Cox 049 update
There was a post where you could buy a new cox 049 for$6.99 I had a cox 049 years ago with a Davis HD crank and head
with the HD crank any 049 cox reed or rotary valve can be made into a diesel and stay together ( no broken cranks)
thus engine $7 (if available) Davis head and HD crank kit $25 total $32 for an 049 diesel martin
I may wrong on the Davis HD cranK it may be a solid shaft thus will not work in a front intake --only a rear reed cox

Is this what you are looking for?
http://www.coxmodels.com/prodinfo.asp?number=008901
They show engines IN STOCK at this time.
I bought a 1/2 doz. in sept and got the cast zinc case variety, all of them. Now I hear that they are shipping the barstock aluminum case types again? is this true.......anyone?

RE: Cox 049 update
I received a box full a couple of days ago -- also barstock.
I called my order in and when I spoke with the sales lady, I told her that I wouldn't accept any of the cast fluted cases. She was very nice and said that the fluted case was the racing engine. If I specifically requested part no. 008901, the barstock engine would be shipped. They may have simply run out of the cast case or gotten so much flack that the engines were pulled -- either way, I've never heard it referred to as the "racing engine".
In initially unpacking the engines, I would rate the P/C fit of this batch as fair to poor and all will need a socket set before running. A couple were really poor (CP would probably be practicing his jump shot to the trash barrel with these). I don't know if the softer pistons are still being shipped or not until I set these -- I can only hope that I swell the piston a bit.

Yep, I can second it...received 10 on 11/16 and I can verify that all cases are from bar stock.

Am I the only guy on the planet who orders a Sure Start and gets one with a cast pot metal crankcase?

I'm guessing the postage will probably be around US$12-15.
But seeing as they are going to contact me about it, I can always back out if it is too much.
It starts to add up once you put the US$-NZ$ exchange rate into the equation.

RE: Cox 049 update
There is hope for these engines if you buy a batch, then seperate all the parts. First priority is to find the P/L matches that will hold air. The crankcase fits can easily be massaged to get a freewheeling prop. The loose fitting pistons can be swelled if you can set them up in a lathe and force a dull tool against the inside of the skirt. My best Surestart will turn a 4.2x4 about 24,000. The only thing holding it back is that the intake tube can't be opened up as large as a KBs', I think the safe limit is about .130".

RE: Cox 049 update
I just ordered myself two of them. Since there is concern about cast cases versus bar stock... I decided to give them a call. A lady I spoke to the other day said that there have been calls before asking the same thing as I wanted to know. She said that they (the engines) will be that of the picture (bar stock). So, I really hope that they indeed are. We'll see, won't we.
This little engine bug has really got me! My first purchase was an OS .10LA that I used on a little SPAD and in a homemade ducted fan unit which proved to be well worth the time. I have plans on putting one of the cox engines away - the other I plan on making a carb for it somehow. I may try using an AP .061 carb with a custom back blate.
If I understand this correctly, the sure start is for an external tank, as per the description on coxmodels? I'm new to this little engine thing.

RE: Cox 049 update
The AP carb isn't very good and needs the needle and the barel tightend up to make it work well. It is more complicated than a piece of fuel tubing on the needle. I haven't spent the time yet to figure out how to get the end play out of the barrel but that is what it need along with the needle threads being tightend.

RE: Cox 049 update
Yeah, I have heard of the AP carb issues - but they are dirt cheap and much closer to the required size for an .049 than anything else I could imagine. Also, after looking at the AP carb parts and schematics, I am willing to bet that a simple tiny o-ring installed inside the carb against the rotor will solve some of the slop issues. The o-ring would act as a shim more than anything else. I will give it a try and post any worth while results, and those not so.

RE: Cox 049 update
Oh yeah, almost forgot. Can someone tell me the size of the AP .061 outter diameter (mm?) of the lower carb throat, the section that installs in to the crankcase? I would really appreciate it, and thanks in advance.

Thanks for the heads up on the Cox Sure Start for $6.99. I haven't been keeping up to date on Cox. I just ordered 6 engines "on line". I hope I get the "Bar Stock" cases.

RE: Cox 049 update
madness - The od of the carb that inserts into the venturi or crankcase is 0.325". Length of insert is 3/16". There is a small 'O' ring which is 1/32" in thickness. There are two holes for hold down screws, which are threaded, and centered in the length... inside diameter of the threads is about .062" ... which fits a tiny little sloppy, but my next size drill bit doesn't fit in the threaded hole. Total weight is 10.1 grams. Keep going with this.

WOW! We are getting picky. We buy an engine for $2.00 less than the retail price of the glow head alone, then b***h about quality.
Just can't please some people.
