REFRAD
REturn FRom Active Duty
Yes, as some of you may have suspected by this time I am home and safe. The Army decided to grant my retirement based on family hardship (that I can't go into detail here) which is almost unheard of during a deployment.
I must say that retirement has been the most disappointing part of my career. No good byes, no out processing, no handshake and a "thank you for your service". None of that, just a ride home and orders to wait 10 days for more orders. My retirement orders came by mail.
I am glad to be home and with the family. At least I have that. My hanger is a mess, I'll get her cleaned up and refreshed, post some photos when I get a chance. Bob, I’ll be needing that second quik shot……………

RE: REFRAD
Congratulations, TJ! Out processing for me at Ft Jackson felt like it was like Uncle Sams' last chance to kick me in the behind for not re-upping....it had almost the same creepy feel as when first going in. I just wanted to get through that flea bitten dump before catching something.
So now is it too soon to think about going back to Iraq as a private contractor?

RE: REFRAD
Pigg,
No contracting for me thank you. The Bible tells us that "as a dog returns to it's own vomit, a fool returns to his folly". At least you got an out processing, I got nothing at all, no DD 214, no flag, nothing. No thanks, I have an interview with the railroad for a management position in a few weeks. I'd rather stay close to the house if'n you don't mind.

RE: REFRAD
Vic will be an insignificant threat at the next race. The time of the little fish is over. A new power is rising in the South, the light has come to excite a darkened reedie world.
Skaliwag,
I am finishing the Eindecker as we speak. A standard red with iron crosses. If it flys as well as I think it should, then the next one is getting lozenge. I'll finish up the build article for you guys in a few days.
Bob,
PM me what you want for the QuikShot. I really like the first one, but being me I already have ideas for the next. Nothing would please me more than to beat Vic with both airframes on the same day, not that it would be much of a challenge you understand........
BM,
I will finish both the Eindecker and the QuikShot within the next few days, I have an A-10 in balsa skeleton for twin 1/2A fans, and a .40 sized Voisin that I've always wanted to build. Should be enough for now. I also have a garden railroad that is a complete mess and needs attention, as well as a dozen or more house and car projects. My 71 Triumph motorcycle is sitting in parts awaiting final assembly and I have a 400hp motor waiting to be installed in my Dodge. That's enough projects for the moment me thinks.
You're Welcome.

Welcome Back and thanks for your service!
Very sorry to hear about your dissatisfaction with the way you got out.. I come from a family where everybody (but me) goes into the military, and three of us went career. The one that is still in is hoping like crazy that his feet won't get him kicked out of the Reserves because he just made LTC and has to remain in grade XX amount of time before he retires in order to keep that compensation level into retirement. My Grandfather came back from Korea and Vietnam/Cambodia all messed up. Body full of metal, heart problems (coulda been Grandma's Southern Cookin' too...) and he became a raging alcoholic when the 101st returned from Vietnam-almost got kicked out of the Army for it. He ended up being forced to retire for medical reasons (his heart) as a Major in 1983 and got stuck in the VA hospital system for the rest of his life. My Uncle got to his last 6 months in service also as a Major and was given orders for 2 years in Korea! Like you, he got an early retirement due to Family Hardship when my Grandfather went downhill.
The .mil sure does know how to treat it's people...

RE: REFRAD
Now now Vic, what's a reedie race without a little smack talkin' before hand? It just adds a little spice to the mix. Hmmm, let's see, you've been practicing for a year, I've been shoveling sand. Yup, you should be nearly my equal by this time[>:]

RE: REFRAD
Sorry your retirement was disappointing. When I left the USMC I was well treated and still stay in touch with some great friends. On the other hand I was short an eye, some bone and function from an ankle and foot and had grown a bit tired of the hospital after the first twelve months or so. In compensation my rakish good looks were enhanced by some tastefull scarring and I have a bit of fun from tome to time with the people operating metal detectors (some have more sense of humor than others-especially those who seem to have been given authority exceeding their intelligence.)
Glad you are home and please accept my thanks and grattitude for your service.

Well, I'll fall in line here to say "thank you for your service"! I truly admire those who are willing to leave home, friends and family to fight for what we believe in. Welcome home... for good!

Be glad your home in one piece. When I got out of the Air Force Reserve after 4 years Active and 18 years flying for the Reserve, getting out was just doing the paperwork back in 1996 and I have not seen or heard from anyone back in the unit or the Air Force since. O.K. by me. A Reserve retirement starts on your 60th birthday. (closer than I'd like to think about) I also work for the railroad as an engineer. PM me if you have any questions I might be able to answer for you.
