TWIN FEVER !!!

RE: TWIN FEVER !!!
Toe in would actually enhance a death spin from the only engine running. The advice I've been given in the past is go with toe out. My own experience has shown that with enough rudder command, that's all you need. It's like flying a RC combat plane with several streamers mopped up on one wing tip, knife edge your way out of it.

One problem is that it doesn't look like any more of a Blackbird at 300 feet out than it does at 5 feet....it just looks like a flying wing with a skinny neck sticking out front. I think it actually looks better up close, in the air it looks like a frying pan flying handle first.

S72, glad you enjoyed that
Here is more detail. The elevator is joined with 5/32" TIG rod. The cowl is about as light as you would expect 1/2 a drink can to be. The model looks like it will finish tail heavy, so the nose area might get a TT .07 or some other kind of dead weight glued inside for ballast.

Ouch!
What did you use to cut the can... some kind of Dremel accessory?

The side walls of the can cut with regular scissors. The bottom of the can is tough, I pilot drilled a hole, then used tin snips to nibble out a larger hole. To finish the hole I used a 1 inch diameter cone shaped grinding attahment in my die grinder. It will also work in a drill motor, but take more time. The final step is to deburr with a #11 blade.

RE: TWIN FEVER !!!
So you dont have the magic wand for it either then.
Last one I did was a sheet of 150grit on the bench and just ran the can bottom back & forth till it acheived Hole, then tried to "rolled-paper" sand down the razor sharp (guess how I know) inner edge. I was looking for a procedure that involved less bloodloss on my part. That edge was sharp, I mean REALLY sharp... like almost as sharp as the TE of an APC prop

RE: TWIN FEVER !!!
Vic, I have to fly that thing again. It was a handfull but looked good in the air. Speaking of the 1/2a contest... I noticed the web site does not work anymore.

RE: TWIN FEVER !!!
It went from being 30-50 degrees every day so far of 2008 to 80 degrees today. That means it's time to get some building done because flying season has officially arrived!
Too bad about the contest site, but stuff like that doesn't just run on "ether fumes" I guess. I would like to see a 1/2A design contest done where the only building materials allowed are household items that have specific uses other than for model aviation. For example, bamboo skewers would be OK, as well as venetian blind slats, take out food containers, etc. I don't think coroplast or depron would qualify to be in the spirit of the contest.
Too bad the old contest never got much of a turn out, only about half of the design proposals ever got finished [&o].

RE: TWIN FEVER !!!
Back by popular demand... http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_27...Cpatrol/tm.htm
I spent 10 min looking for picts on my hard drive and then realized I did not have any. My partner in crime Crankypants took all the picts.
CP- I like your contest idea. That would be fun... and since pretty much everything looks like it can fly to me I've got the advantage

RE: TWIN FEVER !!!
We all should write to Castrol and ask them to make those bottles lighter.
The Ilyushin is beginning to take final shape.....but I don't like the way the stab/elevator looks. It is too pointed, just like Italian shoes [why do they wear pointed shoes? To kill the cockroaches in the corners.]
The tail is also too heavy. I'm going to build a different one with contest grade sheet and see if it can't be made to look better and be lighter.

RE: TWIN FEVER !!!
Rather than build a new one why not cut out half of those stringers ya got in there and loose some of the wood in the horizontal. You're not carrying payload over Axis territory there.
Get some 24oz cans for cryin out loud, we know you are'nt in denial anymore!
I hate to see that much work go the wayside... all in jest bro.

The wing loading is too high for radio gear, all there is left in the weight allowance is for clear covering and a balloon tank.
After reviewing the drawing of the Ilyushin, I must have been MUI while laying out the outline of stab #1......[sm=bananahead.gif]

RE: TWIN FEVER !!!
The new stab was made out of 1/4" contest grade and it turned out weighing 30 grams compared to 35 grams for the stick built version. Its' shape looks better, more like the drawing now. Rough carpentry is just about over, now it's time to knock off the rough edges and finally cover it.

RE: TWIN FEVER !!!
Man, it's about time go back to SWR building. Little details with "real" models eat up time. The trick is to get 2 things done before I can break 1 thing that was already done. Thank God for CA glue and spackle.
For once I got a weight on the model with EVERYTHING it will need to fly except for the covering. It weighs 33 ozs. I'm going to cover it with flat gray monokote, I hope it only picks up a few ozs.. The blue foam areas will get 1 oz cloth and polyurethane, then iron on. The idea is to toughen and heat shield the foam a little before covering.
The scale model has a turret behind the cockpit, but not this model.......the cockpit uglyied the plane up enough already . Otherwise I really like the lines of this bomber.

Thanks Vic, they took almost as much time to do as the rest of the model.
I've been meditating on how to do the window trim details. I think the canopy will get a thin layer of glass and painted. The windows in the nose I'm not so sure about. The windows basically are continuous panes of glass from the tip of the nose to the 2nd bulkhead. I'm figuring that the best way would be to sheet that area and paint those windows like the canopy will be done. The tedious part will be masking off for what looks like about 50 windows on this darn thing.
In the past I've gone with black to represent the windows, the rest of the plane will be a medium darkness grey. I suppose white can work for the windows if there is enough contrast?
