The Schweizer took one in the name of research
Howdy All,
I got a nice calm afternoon yesterday and decided to test fly my Schweizer Glider with the changes I made to the wing incidence. WOW! That thing flew great! I was launching from a couple of empty lots in my neighborhood. The lots are on a hill so it was a perfect site for some light tosses. I gave the glider a light level toss and she was off! It flew the entire distance of the two lots! I had to force a landing for fear of flying across the street into the lake! I made several other flights each one adjusting elevator and rudder trim. The last flight wasn't good cuz the plane flew so well that I hit a house on the adjacent lot. The damage came after the glider clipped a rain gutter on the second story of the house and spiraled to a cement patio below. The damage to the glider was to the canopy and front bulkhead and fuse stringers. I can make another bulkhead but the canopy will need to be shortened about 1/8" since the stringers were shortened. I am really happy with the way it was flying. So for now I have put the glider aside and I am focusing on the Glider #2. I know now that removing the incidence was the right thing to do.
In the interest of keeping Glider #2 light, I have painted the fuse with mist of red and will cover it with unpainted doculam. The wings will probably be red with white trim. I haven't decided how the color scheme will end up yet. Any suggestions.

Flaming skulls & 8balls... the classics never go out of style.
Slap some RallyStripes or a blackouthood cowl on it for extra coolness.
If it had gear, I would tell you to take some liquid paper & do up the wheels ala MickeyTompson Slicks

Geez,
You think I was building a 57 Chevy.[8D] I have now painted the vertical and horizontal stabs red which will be covered in clear Doculam. The elevator and rudder will be painted white covered in clear doculam too. I have misted the inside of the vac formed nose and am trying for a translucent red effect for it. The wing panels will covered with red painted doculam on the top side with white from the top spar to the leading edge. The bottom of the wings will be clear. I am curious how light I can make this one.

Robert,
Got any plans for the Hula girl with the grass skirt on a spring for the dash? Here is what I got so far. The tail feathers are still drying. It looks pretty neat. The nose did turn out see through. No more touch ups due to paint chipping off.

CP,
Thanks! I thought I would try something different. So far so good. I am thinking of possibly painting the wing bones too, but I don't know how visible the plane would be if I did that. Hmm.

I was thinking the same thing. If you have some transparent colored covering, it would be interesting to see what effect you get from putting [for example] transparent yellow over the red ribs.
I think it would look very cool to just go with clear over the whole works and maybe some highlights on the wings to help see which side is up.

CP,
Yeah I was thinking of possibly painting the wing bones and putting a real fine mist of red on the doculam to make it as transparent as possible. I will hold up some yellow painted doculam on the fuse and see how that would look too. I think the glider may look like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer when the Spektrum Receiver lights up.

Sorry... couldn't help it.
That new glider looks good! I'd like to try building one of these little ones soon with tissue or doculam. Looking forward to seeing the final result. Thanks for sharing the pics.

OK here is a teaser of what the wing panels will be covered with. I will only cover the tops of the wings with this and the bottom of the wings will be completely clear.

That really looks good. Visibility will be better with some color on the wings instead of just coloring the bones.
So what have you done? is that Doculam treated somehow or another covering?

Robert,
It is doculam misted through an old anti skid mat for a floor mat. Turned out pretty good. I almost have one wing panel done now. You will have to wait and see.

RE: The Schweizer took one in the name of research
Ooops, I guess I came back to this party too late.
But I had an idea for the WingBones.
Not super easy & fast, but not too hard, and might look cool:
Spray the bones botom skin contact surfaces color A,
Skin the bottom only,
Spray thru(between) the bones color A onto bottom skin (decent coverage without glue/shrink fears),
Spray color B on bones,
Skin the top with clear.
The plan is to have the bottom appear solid color A, while the veiw from the top is color B bones thru clear skin.
The question is, does that have a snowballs chance of working semi-longterm, and would the solid bottom mess with the Coolness of painted bones ith clear skin.

I had a feeling it was the Doculam with some sort of special treatment. Was really curious how you did it but now I know.
After looking at your picture I started thinking of ways to limit the amount of paint sprayed (or fogged) onto the Doculam. I was thinking of a loose weave material like window screen material which would work but it would provide a whole different look.
My thinking is reflected back to an article I had of Flying Models back in the '70s. The article mentioned using a lace material (or probably paper lace) to use as a sort of stencil and to provide a rather complicated pattern to the finish of a plane.
Your choice of just coloring one side of the panel is of course a good one. A little bit of color will go a long way towards visibility.

Here is one wing panel completed. Baby woke up from a nap so my covering time got limited. I hope to get the other wing done today.

Robert,
This is as far as I got tonight. Got the two wing panels done and horizontal stab and elevator covered and hinged. I better get some rest in case I have to scoop 5 inches of snow in the morning.[:@]

Looking good Hec!
I would be interested in finding more ways (or overlays) to limit the amount of paint on the Doculam. Especially if it will produce a pattern or attractive design in the process.
