PBF!!!
It's been too long since I flew a PBF. Why, I don't know.....they are a blast, even with a plain old reedie. This one will be 18x18 including flaps. The frame is 1/4x1/4 balsa, toothpicked [doweled]everywhere there is an accessible glue joint. The flap servos will be pull/pull. It will have a rudder, but actually these planes will do just about everything just fine with just the flaps, the rudder will flatten out spins and make hovering more controllable

RE: PBF!!!
The first PBF I built changed my life (no, not that way)!
It was the true SPAD version, heavy, flexed like crazy, and could do things I never would have thought I could (or wanted to) do with a model airplane. Beat the heck out of it, and it would come right back for more. I'm not sure how many I built and gave away.
The best 1/2A one I built was Cornbread (... are square, mufffins are round?). But mine acted heavy.
But I have to admit that I've slunk to even lower forms of depravity via ESPA3-Ds. Hoot is another good one.
Now thanks to you CP (darnit), I'm wondering how long it would take to put a FFF 1/2A version together? I would need LG for touch-n-goes and takeoffs.

RE: PBF!!!
Jeeze, I wasn't even close but I tried. (The area of a circle isn't "Pi R Squared" cuz Pie are round). I'll have to wait a few years to spring that one on my grandkids.
I had the plane's name right and the fact that it was fun to fly anyway.

Rog, it is flimsy...but the covering helps. If you can make one to fly at 9 ozs, even a stock reedie can hover it and might even get some torque rolls, too [X(]. I plan on using the VA because it looks like the throttle will give nice fine control.
It might even be possible to win a heat at the reedie race after the other pilots get motion sickness from watching the PBF and drop out of the race?

The PBF is PFB!
It ended up weighing 9.6 ozs with a 300 mah battery and 2 oz tank. The VA throttles instantly with a 6x2 APC! The control for hovering couldn't be better. My wife asked what the key to torque rolling was [after doing one in the first 30 seconds after launch] and I told her in my case it's pure luck.
The rudder doesn't add a whole lot to the gyrations, it helps with hovering. I think it will be interesting to add rudder area below the belt to see if the spins will flatten out. It does wild climbing spins.
I played around with the CG, more aft improves the antics but invites worse forward flight. Moving the CG forward dampens the nasty dipping and tucking, but it will always be there with this kind of airfoil.
The VA exhaust confines the mess to the underside, and there wasn't much to wipe off after an hour of flight. Patrick, this engine is too nice dude!

RE: PBF!!!
NOT ANOTHER ONE! ! ! ! !
I remember when you handed me the sticks for the last one a couple of years ago. Up to then I'd never flown a plane that could be said to "trip over its own shoelaces". It sure did have an odd way of flying to it.
Good luck with this latest incarnation.

RE: PBF!!!
CP,
That looks cool. I have seen pics of some small lecky PBFs and some big foam ones. all very cool. But I don't know about that McDonald guy (he taught me to fly RC) he makes everything he flies look easy! The PBF url is rediculously huge and fun.
We want VIDEOS...please

OzMo, it's a small world...you guys are practically neighbors. I know the Ft Leonardwood, Waynesville area a little.
The whole 3D profile thing really sparked my interest in RC, I had been mostly C/L. When I was told about the coroplast PBF at RCU, I had a mental image that it was going to be a waste of time to look at it...I didn't even know how to use a computer.
That PBF thread was what got me going, how could 20 million viewers be all wrong about it?
I've never seen so many guys all pumped up over any kind of plane.
I'm going to look into getting a camcorder

Patrick, if you build a nice plane for it, I might let you have it back someday .
I think LD picked that prop for the best all around performance for the RC engine. It performs outstandingly with that glass prop.
I'm pretty sure the best VA II combat props have less diameter. I used to use cut down 5x3s.
This engine really pulls the Kahuna around with a 4.2x4, even the vertical was pretty good.
It's easily the best all around true 1/2A sport engine I've ever handled.

RE: PBF!!!
In keeping with the whole PBF thing a biplane version would need to look like one end of a box kits with vertical "struts" as big as the main two wings. Mind you it sure would make for easy knife edge flying....
Sort of like the "Which Way?" sketch I did a few years back.

RE: PBF!!!
CP-
Every time I see that pic, I ask myself,
Why is CP using a huge stump of a peg for pull/pull horn?
Is it a pull/pull thing, or what... why not the classic triangle horn?

RE: PBF!!!
Bruce, your concept drawing puzzles me because the tail is not in phase with the wing. The only way I could see flying it is like a plane with lots of dihedral. Someone with lots of 3D experience [like JC] should give it a try.
KE, the pegs are taken from the HalfWit design. With a sharpened 3/16" brass tube they take just seconds to install. For the long haul, I like ply horns better too.
I already had $1.80 wrapped up in this and didn't want to go over budget.

Gotta love 1/2A, you'll never hear the Heli or Turbine guys say that.
