BDF1 kind-a
Hey Guys,
Here's my Kind-a BDF1. I call it Kind-a, because I kind-a didn't want to mess with the twin rudders (lazy) so I adapted my own straight tail. By the way, thanks again Mr Wood for sharing the plan!

I've never been much of a fan of twin tail aircraft, so I think your revision is much more attractive than the original. Years ago I did Laumer's Buttons with a single fin and will eventually do the same with Twin Lizzie.

Combat,
Over the summer I acquired a bunch of Cox .020's which I'm in the process of finding homes for, in the form of planes. Of course one being the BDF along with a nearly completed Laumer Yardbird and a reduced size Bill Winter Krackerjac. As for the control of the BDF, it will be RC. If your interested in the plan, PM me and I'll e-mail you a copy.

Combat,
I can't believe your telling me that you've never seen FF before. If not, you should attend a FF event sometime: you'd be amazed at what these guys can do! The first model I saw, in the early sixtys, 63, was my uncles Zipper take off with a screaming, low powered, Super Cyke 60 screaming skyward (at a very slow rate). We all gathered in his station wagon (pre-SUV) and chased it for several miles. He was very "Old school": No de-thermalizer! I followed suite with all the old 1960's Comet kits; anything I could fit an .049 or .020 on. I do RC now, simply beause I like to be in control of my planes, and like to have them back in one piece. But I must confess: I've got a 1/2a Spacer FF ready to go and I'm in the process of building a 1/4a Sailplane for SAM FF. That kid from the 60's is still bugging me!!

That is relaxing FF. I cannot imagine trimming an FAI
model with a 100 MPH climb. I used to think my
Ramrods had a fast climb. 35000 RPM and God knows
how much horsepower. At my age I dont have the
pucker power to handle it.

TP, It seems like either the desert or a shut down AFB would be the only places to do it? I did watch Jim Booker hand launch a .049 Cyclon powered ship on a 2 second run nearby. It shot straight up, then the huge stab kicked up something like 60 degrees and the plane landed like it was being lowered by an invisible hand.

Combat,
The relaxing FF that Mylamo and Rainedave are talking about dosen't really require a vast open space. Just a limited amount of fuel, an airplane that's trimmed really well and a dethermalizer (sometimes). Case in point being a Dakota that's designed NOT to thermal; they go up, run out of gas and come right back down (most of the time!) Anyway, hope to have the BDF flying in the next week or so, I'll post some pics.
By the way, they ought to change the name from Cyclon to Psycho: I've never heard an engine scream like one of those!

When I first got introduced to model aviation, I couldn't believe that guys would build planes like that and turn them loose.[X(] I've never seen it in person.

That pretty much describes a lot of my models.... including, sad to say, a couple of cases of RC models that were reverted to FF when I forgot to turn on the Rx before tossing it.....don't ask.....
Cute model Tri-Pacer. I like the conversion and I have to admit that a similar single tail mod to a Buttons or Twin Lizzie would be just fine I'd think. Of course what would you call the Lizzie then?

Dave,
After seeing your dad's BDF, kind-a makes me wish I had done the twin rudders. I think I'll build one just for FF. All this talk of FF has me motivated!
As for the Laumer Buttons, I was thinking of leaving the tail as it was and just going with ailerons. As for the Lizzie, I saw where someone took out the dihedral and rounded the wingtips.

I was at a club meeting, not many people attend them and since I have to get up early to go (work at night) I quit going except when I have to beg to get the field for a flyin.....one time a guy asked if free flight was ok?...NO was the big answer...you do have to basically be in the desert to do free flight and have a chase bike to go get your plane with.....but I guess there are different types of FF,,,I have heard it said that the right ff makes slow clockwise circles on the way up and then slower ccw circles on the way down...Rog
but I guess there are distance and time trophys too...

That's a really cute Lizzie with the curved wing tips. Definetly looks more in tune with the tail surfaces. Got any more history or details about that one? I may just have to go for the same mod on mine.

Bruce,
I believe I got this off of this form: Do a search on Laumer and it should pop up. I think the guy is from Sweeden or maybe Swiss, not sure. He's got a little diesel powering it. In any case, here's another picture.

RE: BDF1 kind-a
I have built many Pee Wee and small diesel powered
planes that could be flown on a football field with one
minute engine runs. On the other hand 500 feet altitude
in five seconds is not relaxing, but it is thrilling.
CP the engine run is timed from when it leaves the
flyer's hand or ROG as is the duration of the flight. A max
is generally assigned according to the acerage of the
field.A timer actuated fuel shutoff as well as a device
to bring the model down after a max is reached is very
important.
