Default Thunder Tiger .18. We ran one!

Mr. Brown brought a long awaited box from Ace - Thunder Tiger yesterday. There were a lot of goodies not in there that I have been waiting for but that's food for another post. They have discontinued a lot of stuff.
Anyway there was some of the new TT-18's .... So today, with the aid of another member of this forum and local "Motor Head" we ran one.
This is what it gave us...

Fuel used .. Power Master Break in Special.. Oil content, unknown.... Nitro content Unknown but we believe it to be quite low as we ran another engine (Replica KB .020) on it that much prefered this brew to the Sig 25 and some generic 15 offered.

APC 8 X 4 14800 - 3200
APC 8 X 5 14000 - 2900
APC 8 X 6 13100 - 2900

APC 9 X 4 12500 - 2600

APC 9.5 X 4.5 12600 - 2800 **** Same prop that a PAW 19 turns at 11800.

Master Airscrew 9 X 4 12460 - 2900
Master Airscrew 9 X 5 11500 -- No idle reading .. Was not happy on this prop.

The claimed weight of 5.7oz is without the muffler. With the muffler the scales show 7.3oz.

Chevy has his Paw 19 on a Heer Lil Extra that does vertical with ease. We used the prop off this engine in the test. PAW = 11800, TT 18 = 12600.

The .18 ci is way out of my size range ( like 10X) but I think this reasonably priced, $69.70, sportster coupled with something like a Lil Extra or the Ace Simple Ultimate or R-Dave's new acrobat might work out to be a viable mix.

I like the built in radial mount. It looks like it gets in the way for beam mounting though... Could grind off the beam mount lugs

EDIT// second look at the pictures the radial does not interfear with the beam mounting. I guess I just like to cut/grind/weld/or otherwise alter metal.

The claimed weight of 5.7oz is without the muffler. With the muffler the scales show 7.3oz.
This happened with the .28 -- Thunder Tiger 4 U listed the lower weight, but indicated that the muffler was included. They also claimed a weight of 5.7 oz w/ muffler for the .18. Makes quite a difference in the power/weight ratios with a 28% weight gain.

Steve -- does the backplate screw in like the AP or NORVEL?

EDIT: I think I can see it in your third pic. Is there a wrench shipped with the engine?

Back plate is threaded in. Comes with a multi purpose wrench. Hope to have a picture of what comes in the box later today

This is very interesting. How does this compare to the OS 15 CV-A, in terms of total weight and performance?

This would be a fun engine on something like the Lil Extra, and cheap too!

What does it use in the way of a glow plug?

Comes with a "Red Line #2" plug and a multi purpose wrench. Red Line may be a Thunder Tiger name.

Is it a standard 1/4-32 plug?

I had hopes for higher performance. Looks like this engine & the K&B .18 have about the same out-of-the-box performance. K&B performance with MAS 8x4 prop [(not GF3, but earlier one) Did not try a MAS GF3, or an APC on this engine, but either of those props will load down a Enya 15-IV considerbly] ;

MECOA/K&B .18 results;

10% nitro

15,500 with stock muffler
16,100 with dual pipe Semco muffler
16,900 with open exhaust
16,900 with stock manifold, no muffler
16,700 with stock manifold adapted to small mousse can

33% nitro

16,000 with Semco muffler (less than 10% nitro performance ?????????)

Weight is 6&1/8 OZs w.o. muffler, 7&1/2 with muffler. Cost of the K&Bl is considerbly higher.

Would be nice to know how this engine likes an increased diet of nitro. ...... For now I'll stick with the conquest, even with the increased weight & that cumbersom rear exhaust. .................. George K.

Is that Mr. Bunny's Evil Ride in the photos?

Don't make me put my Conquest in my Lil Extra to keep up

No Rob.. That's one from Inventory. Mr. Bunny's ride was used for the rpm comparison with the 9.4 X 4.5 APC though. This would make a faster machine than Mr. Bunny's.

Thanks for the test Skaliwag. How was the engine's handling? Easy to start, smooth idle, transition etc?

The performance sounds like it's a slightly bigger TT 15, a fairly mild engine but very pleasant to use IMHO.

Idle and transition are good. and should get better as it get more time on it. We ran it a click or two rich on all the runs. The carb has an adjustable airbleed for those of you that like to play with the little screwdriver. I would say it is user freindly and the price is right. The wieght is practically the same as a Hot Rod Double BB OS 15 and a lot less money.

As "mtntopgeo" said, the power is comparable to the K&B 18. That doesn't say much for the K&B considering it has dual ball races.

Wow Steve, that looks HUGE on the nose of that Lil' Extra! I may have to consider that if my Norvel ever gives up on me...Thanks again for the call tonight, and by the way, do you think that may be too big for the Skydrill? -Craig

Far too big for a Skydrill.. But there are some people out there that woud do such things... They are the kind that put 454's in Mini Coopers... You know who you are...
