W.E.B. Griffin
Dear Small-Minded People,
I've heard that some of youse-all claim to read books. Real ones with big words and lots of pages. Sometimes even stories about bad guys and good guys in them - war stories sometimes.
I will stick my neck out and declare that I think that W.E.B. Griffin is one of the best writers of this type of novel around. The really good news is that he has written a bunch of them. The only small downside is that the aviation side of his stories are not his primary focus.
I'm particularly fond of his "The Corps" series (Marine Corps of course). I just finished book IV, Battleground, of that series. I know I've read it before, maybe twice before, so that makes three. Yeah, I like the way he writes. This story is about the WWII war in the Pacific and has a few F4F pilot characters. [Be forewarned that parts of it are not necessarily kind to Navy brass (Guadalcanal)].
So, here's the deal; if you don't mind reading a series book out of sequence (each is his books stands alone just fine anyway), and you can afford the heavy price I intend to extract from you, and if you act before midnight tonight (or before midnight any night) I will send the afore-mentioned literature directly to you through the United States Postal Service (in a plain brown paper wrapper naturally). What is this "heavy price" you ask? Just this, I will send it to the first person who responds to me via PM with his/her U.S. Mail address. If anyone else is interested, they must send a PM to the person who has responded before them with their address, etc.
So the first person responds here; Yes I am person "one" sign me up. I am sending a PM to Raymond.
The second person responds here, Yes I would like to be person "two", I am sending a PM to person "one".
The third person responds here, Yes I would like to be person "three", I am sending a PM to person "two".
Ad infinitum.
Ok so I lied about the "heavy price". So sue me . . . No! No! Forget I said that! Nobody charges nothin'.
Why you ask, is this swell fellow, Raymond, going to all this trouble just to get a paperback book off his shelf? Can't say really. Just seemed like something fun to do (it IS a good read). And maybe someone who doesn't "know" Mr. Griffin will awaken to something more entertaining than "Celebrity Circus"(!)

After reading Clancy's Red Storm Rising (and more recently, The Bear & The Dragon), I must say other authors are on my B-list, although Larry Bond's Red Phoenix is very good

I don't think I have enough engine for the 8-footer. I have everything else for it, but the largest engine I have for conversion is about 38cc, and I don't think it will fly a 25lb plane well...
Ya know, I'm ashamed to admit I haven't even flown yet this season...

Confessions you want huh? I'll give you confessions by jingo; I LIKE electric-powered model airplanes! There, stick that in your glow plug and smoke it.
But I still love my liddle TD .010s and .020s. That's got to be worth something around here.
(I also like pina coladas and walking by the seashore at midnight. Well, pina coladas not so much cuz the alcohol makes me dizzy and the sand does get between my toes.)
For W.E.B. fans; if Killer McCoy was a modeler would he fly combat or racing? (There is only one correct answer - and he would do it with a Fairbairn. Did I spell that right?)

Killer shows up in The Corps series, first or second book. When I find one (I buy books at the second hand store in Raleigh) I'll pick it up for you because I know you will love it. I'll probably read it again before you get it anyway.
Edit, I can't even afford a Baby Fairbairn. (And the only reason I looked it up because that's what Killer used in his first street fight.)

Ohhh Vicko,
. . . Please bring your Fairbairn with you when next we meet. I would love to see it, hold it, plunge it into . . . er, ah, pant, pant . . . must be a reaction to stopping the anti-anti-social meds. Never mind about the plunging thing.
(Pssst Vic, do you think someone will object to all this mano-a-mano, one-to-one communications? I guess I'll switch to PMs and not tie up RCU's bandwidth. Sorry whoever.)

Speaking of great writers that us modelers like.....
If you have not read him yet, give Dean Ing a try. I really like his technothrillers. He is a modeler as well and occasionally sprinkles his novels and short stories with model projects. Lots of fun aviation related stuff in most of his works, plus some fascinating future of flight type stuff.
"Loose Cannon" is a thriller based on a hobbyist developing micro UAVs that stirs up some bad guys in interesting ways.

Boy I'm glad I made this post since youse all have put me on to two authors I didn't know. I "won" a Larry Bond book from the 'bay" yesterday and now I get to go after Dean Ing. Hey, anybody else got another favorite (besides Clancy, Cussler, etc.)?
Oh I forgot Martin Caidin, he's good. Richard Bach, not so much.

I read Flags of our Fathers. Really, really puts people in those faces. You are right Vic [boy that's not something you see often ]. Brady's book is a must-read.

I'll bet there are a dozen of W.E.B.s books I haven't read yet! I got into his police series most recently. Isn't it great to have more of them to look forward to?

You are right Vic
When I typed those words - I kept making mistakes, backspacing, trying again and again. Finally I resorted to poking one key at a time with my index finger. It was like my brain was struggling against some primal-level to keep me from saying something against nature. But there it is for all the world to see. So friend Vic, go ahead andprint out my post and hang it above your workbench. That's what I would do if I were you.
Oh OK I'll get serious, "Flyboys" is now on my list. Thank you.

I wasn't going to mention it but since its just between youse-all and me - after I saw the movie "flyboys" I wasn't too excited about reading the book. Sorry Hollywood but I think you missed. So now I'm all a-twitter to read it based on your comments. Doesn't that make you proud?
Ah, the prolific Mr. Whitehouse. Top drawer, jolly good.
