Well it flys excellent, I flew it today, what a clean flying airplane.

Any ideas on the price of this plane? And how does it fly with the magnum? I have a NIB .15 magnum and this looks like a great little plane. Looks to be pretty fast.

After several years away from the building board, I've finally decided to start working on a new plane. I got this kit from rainedave over 8 years ago! It has been lurking under my bed and in the back of my conscience ever since. I need to round up a few odd slivers of wood and buy some new glues before getting too serious. Has anyone heard from rainedave lately? Are there other unbuilt Shark XVs out there? Has anyone powered one with a TD .09 yet?

Tee Bee... Great to see you back on RCGroups and building again. I am doing the same... cleaning up the workshop today in preparation.

I helped Rainedav, David Wood, pack up from Greensboro, NC and move to the Norfolk, VA area about 2 years ago. His Dad had just passed away. Dave was awesome supporting his Dad so that he could continue to stay at home even to the end. After that, Dave essentially wanted to start over and see new beginnings.

He mentioned giving aeromodelling a break, but he would continue and pick it back up eventually. I have not seen any new posts for awhile.

Dave is one of the best modelers I know and a good friend. This is evidenced by all the posts he gas supported in RCGroups with vintage models in the magazines, especially pattern planes and the help he would offer to anyone. He loved reading through old RCM's, Flying Models, American Aircraft Modeller, etc. Dave is also one of the best builders around - a true craftsman.

I had a chance to fly his 1/2A Sure Shark - great flying model. He designed it after the same building method Joe Bridi used on the Kaos.

Thanks, Brian. Good to know Dave is alright. It's been several years since I've built a new model. I recently started flying again after nearly a year away from it. My enthusiasm is now renewed. I've spent some time getting a handful of my old glow-powered planes repaired and running again the last couple of months and have been itching to do some building. I have a few unfinished projects around but was thinking I'd try to commit to building something new I could take to the next SMALL. I haven't flown an .09 in quite a while and need a good platform for one. This might not be a speedster configured that way but I'm thinking it will still be a nice, sporty flier.

TB - A Sure Shark would be a great flier, especially if built light. I would think an .09 would be fine.

The TD .09 can get the job done, prop selection of course will be key to
utilize it's abilities. Over the summer I put in some time looking for good
speed and thrust for the DART design. A pattern plane of course will
benefit with a APC E prop giving up a bit of pitch for more dia. The engine
was never screaming rather loaded to hit on it's peak torque with a big
dose of pitch. Also the MA 5.5 x 4.5 gives a good consistent needle.
The sleeper prop is the APC 6x4E thicker foil at the hub / low weight keeps
the rpm up with with excellent thrust. I have bench tested with the Norvel .074.
The prop could see up to 26oz static thrust with the TD .09 Another one to try
the APC 5.5x4.5E could be just right to hold a knife edge pass.

APC 6x4 - Heli Muffler 19,147 rpm / 196w / .262hp / 22oz thrust / 73 mph

The new 2/3 AAA 400mAh cells will help keep the weight down and
allow 5 flights per charge with 4 servos / torque range of 40oz. My
peak charger trickles them up to 460 mah back in the day this size
battery was 220 mAh.

With modern gear you can get your plane RTF at 16 - 17oz
2oz tank will be a good bit of run time.

Good info! Thanks a lot. I'm hoping for enough torque and speed for pattern style performance but not crazy RPMs to cause excessive engine wear.

Yes that's what was interesting with the results, thru tapping into the torque.
The .09 displacement allows higher pitched props uncommon to .049's.
The engine was quite in comparison most passes never exceeded 22k.

Just keeping this thread alive. The Shark is slowly taking shape. The Medallion .09 is being used for initial build/fitment/trimout. It will be flown with a low compression glow head to keep the speeds down a bit at first. The TD will be bolted up after she's lined out. Not planning to use a throttle. Had a bit of a time getting the compound curves sorted on the top front sheeting but it's been fun to spend some time at the building board again.

Don't forget about the AP .09 or .15. They will outdo a TD by a little bit, and are more modern for less $, unless it is a gift of course. The rear exhaust is sometimes in the way, or messy, like a TD with no muffler.

If you have ever attended a SMALL event you know that a lot of swapping and giving of model airplane stuff is the theme. The engine I have for TeeBee's plane is from Joe Wagner's collection. I would imagine that the fun factor will win out over all out performance.

Well stated, Steve. Like many others, I've had a life-long connection with Cox engines. They are just my preference when it comes to small glow power. I had a TD .09 in mind when I first saw this design by rainedave many years ago and I'm sticking to it. Performance rates just below fun for me and I think it's fun to fly models with various Cox engines. The SMALL connection is a neat bonus. Joe Wagner is a modeling legend and I'd be honored to fly one of his engines on my plane.

TeeBee - Can't wait to see it fly at SMALL this year with Joe's engine. Wish Joe could be there to see it.

I miss seeing him napping in any available lawn chair he could find on the flightline

Too bad it is a 15 hour drive for me. Sounds like a hoot. No one around here flies little stuff but me, and it is pretty windy here all the time even if I want to get out. I have even been flying larger stuff now, like a .46. Eww.

Aspeed - I understand. My drive is 12 hrs from Greensboro, NC to Little Rock, AR. At least this year my oldest can help drive given he just earned his license.

We drive out on Thursday and back on Sunday, so we get (2) full days on Friday and Saturday to fly and catch up with the crew. Key is to get up early in the AM and out to field for full day of flying.

Well worth the effort. Some guys fly out which is another option, efficient but more costly.

I guess you aren't heading down then. I think there was a SMALL meet near Ottawa for a short time. That was a long drive too. I never made that one either. I lived in Waterloo then, for 50 years.

Well, I keep thinking about it. And I get more vacation now. I tend to think I'd fly down with a couple of carefully selected* toys, but there didn't seem to be any air fares less than about $800 or so as I recall. Should check from Buffalo.

When the weather gets a bit more cooperative, I could be convinced to driving to Ruthven with some goodies if you wanted. Not too many times perhaps.. but at least once.




* i.e. whatever two are working the best, or at all.

9.5hr drive for me to Little Rock. I would be the only one there flying
very fast based on the vids posted last year. Folks would be laying low
waiting for the terror to stop. Novelty at first then a air space nuisance
in short order.

As discovered through my many years of being involved with the SMALL movement, there are many types of flying other than seeing how fast you can go. Some are beyond description. Seeing is not always believing when at SMALL.
It's about the fun factor and the reunion of the like minded although some chose not to bring their minds with them.
