Shark XV Build Thread

It would only be a nuisance for maybe 20 circuits. Maybe 2 minutes. No problem. I remember letting go of a pulse jet as a kid. As soon as it fired up, everyone ran and hid behind their cars.

Alcarafa, I'm afraid not. All I have is the wrinkled and rolled up paper drawings I got from Rainedave about 8 years ago. Not sure if he checks up on the forums much but you might try sending him a PM.
Pond Skipper, I'm sure you would be welcomed at SMALL if you decide to come play(I drive 500 miles to get there.) Surely you'd find windows of opportunity for some hot laps. Just don't expect other participants to let you have the flightline to yourself. Some fairly fast 1/2As and electrics have been flown there in years past without issues. It's definitely not a gathering of speedsters but a conglomeration of all sorts of small flying machines. The more variety, the better. Many of the aircraft at SMALL have character. Most of the pilots ARE characters.

Yep. I was pitted next to that incident. I also remember a certain someone shutting the same guy down when he fired up a quickie 40 racer. That definitely did not belong there.

I'm giving this some serious thought. My holidays got bumped to 4 weeks and still have 5 days from last year. On the flip side I see Days of Speed and Thunder is the weekend prior. Why does that always have to happen?

Taking a twin engine speeder to the site would be good way to nix the travel time.
A Learjet would be even better after about 4 drinks I would be there. They have
a cruise speed of 500 mph + would be there in 1.2 hrs tops. We need to just charter
a jet and have it round up everyone and their gear.

FYI this is in the works for TD .020 fans.

Well, as long as it:
- doesn't rain
- modest crosswinds
- grass strip every two hours with mogas or 100LL
- one stop to pull the rocker covers and replenish the oil
- we can fit all the airplanes and supplies in

We could lay down and strap ourselves to the wings to leave room in the spare seat for more RC gear.
Then prey there is enough hp to lift us all up into the great blue yonder. I would probably wiz on the
wing out of sure terror on take off biting my tongue even if we do manage to clear the ground.

I know I always do, the cockpit is a horror story afterwards, not to mention my flight suit, the cushions soaked, yech. We put extra water drains in the fabric below the cockpit but it hardly helps. Plus.. the wind whips it around so we always share.
Actually I got queasy and decided I didn't want the big farmer's breakfast I just ate one day as we were flying below low cloud deck.. I hastily folded the map into a container, you can imagine how well that went, then jettisoned that over the side. There were bits of potato and whatnot swirling around in the turbulence in the cockpit. Whee.
My crowning achievement is farting in the front cockpit while we're cruising at 75 - 5 seconds later over the intercom.. "OMG did you just fart?!!".. open cockpit, who'd a stunk, er, thunk it?

Haha least that's an open cockpit, I use to fly acro with a buddy who needed air time hours towards his
commercial pilots licence. First time out he tried to make me ralph it out not a chance. I was filming
with my super 8 Sony cam during all the maneuvers. Odd looking threw a eye piece in a 1000ft spinning
dive. This was back in the day when I was 26 and fearless. These days I would be worried about
mech / structural issues during any trick.

I've experienced very little acro flying, the most adventurous we get the old girl is wingovers, lazy eights, and buzzing friends/relatives. We'll never loop it or otherwise exceed about 50% of original specs. Everything is sound, but it's a 76 year old airplane and it doesn't need to show off for our benefit.
Besides, a buddy of ours just hangared his "new" Acrosport 1 in the owner's barn/hangar next door - two seater and aerobatic. I'll bring a proper barf bagthis time. When I get a few more hours in sailplanes I plan to do some basic aerobatic training, good skills to have.

Any new progress pics Tee Bee, I imagine you have the Shark covered by now?
No Mike, not mine just my train of thought these days in retrospect of how
I was as a young man. There is a nice sail plane airport about a hr. away
from here you can take joy rides for a few bucks. Bucket list item for sure.

Pond Skipper, I'm still at it but progress has been very slow due to work and other projects. Got the wing panels built and am thinking about hopping on a motorcycle today for a 100 mile round trip(nearest hobby shop) for some trailing edge stock if they have it in stock. Looks like I'm on track to finish this thing in April.

Little Rock, yes sir!
Scored some trailing edge stock along with some other goodies at Samano's Hobbies and am on the way home with it now.
It was 87F on the road today, in February!

The wings have been joined and the center section glassed. I installed mounts for individual wing servos. That will leave more room to work in the fuse and give better ability to locate equipment as needed for CG control as opposed to a center servo with torque rods. I will probably end up mounting stuff further forward than the previous guys since the TD .09 weighs a lot less than a full house Magnum .15 w/muffler. Have spent lots of time shaping and sanding the wings, tail, and control surfaces. Note that I tapered the ailerons forward like rainedave did on the prototype. Trying to get a little done each day when possible.
On a non-1/2A side note, I picked up this discontinued E-Flite Rare Bear when I was at the hobby shop the other day. The box rode home strapped to the motorcycle seat. They are getting pretty scarce to find these days and I was surprised to see it on the shelf behind some newer stuff. Should be a hoot to fly once I get some appropriate batteries.

Looking good Tee Bee you should have a really nice smooth grooving flying machine there.
I have always liked the Rare Bear look soft grass is your friend with them painted foamies.
Perhaps some thick very very sticky clear tape under the belly / wing tips will help keep it's
colors intact.

Made a lite-ply hatch up front, drilled/tapped the wing mount bolt hole, installed the wing servos and mounting dowel. Switch, servo harnesses, battery pack, etc should arrive this week.
