Default Wildwing+Surestart?

My friend is giving me an old Wildwing (like a Zagi) and I am tempted to put a sure start as a pusher. Mount all the guts on the inside.

So what yall think?

At one time we had eleven Zagis in our club. Raced 'em. Combatted 'em. Generally beat them to pieces. But I would have thought they were kinda heavy for an .049. Keep it as light as you can.

I double dare you, deadstickpilot, to catch it when the engine quits.

Haha

More inthuesasim than I thought. I don't think I can catch it, because I am not sure it will even fly XD.

We will see, I have a virtually new surestart with the cast case. Any ideas on props?

If you are going to do "Pusher config" with the C*x it's a good idea to use one with the brass driveplate. Does your cast case have a regular aluminum d-plate?

I think it has the regular one. What is the difference between the regular one and the brass one?

Wow! Esteban did good! Flies way better than I thought.

I learned two things from this experience;

1. I CAN be wrong (rarely and it won't become a habit).

2. Them little reedies can pack a punch (dang, I guess that means twice!)

The cast cases have a bad reputation for wearing prematurely.

Aluminum running against aluminum tends to gall. When two metals rub against each other, in the best case situation, they will polish to a mirror smoothness and form a good bearing surface. Aluminum against aluminum or in your case, aluminum against some zinc alloy, may gall or get rougher instead of smoother. The brass thrust washer that skaliwag recommended will give you a better wear characteristics than the aluminum one.

A steel shim washer between the case and the prop washer will also work. I had a TD with that set up and it was fine.

Ok, so I will be picking up the wings probably next weekend, because as for now I am stuck in Sacramento. The wing needs a bit if TLC, then it should be good to go!!

It poped once and didnt do anything from there.... The motor is brand new. Its getting plenty of fuel, and good glow. Why isn't it starting?

close the needle, not hard just closed, open it 3 turns it should fire with a prime ,,new older type may take 4 turns open,,what fuel are you using, its gonna want some nitro to run good....if it fires let it run for a few seconds before you adjust the needle until its broken in,,which should take aobut 2 minutes with a cox!...Rog

DSP

If it won't run on exhaust prime and your glowplug is hot, then you may have some compression leakage. First, try the leakdown test. Turn the prop until the engine reaches top dead center, then count to 4 - 4 seconds or so. Flick the prop. If it doesn't kick over due to compression, then it's leaking most likely past the head gasket.

Squirt some fuel onto the head between the glowplug and cylinder top and turn back to TDC. If you get bubbles, then you need to check the head gasket for rough spots, deformation or rolled edges. Also check the gasket seat at the top of the cylinder for any debris in addition to the plug seat. The gasket can be smoothed out using 400 to 600 grit paper on glass with a little oil. The same is true for the plug seat. A decent surestart should hold compression for a count of 5, then kick back to BDC. Several that I have were leaky.

With fuel, fire and compression, these things will run.

Since you have the engine installed in a pusher configuration, could the tank be gravity feeding the engine and flooding it? If this is the case, try running it off primes with the needle closed. If it runs off the primes, then try with the needle open.

I am not familiar with that plane, but perhaps you need to hold it level until it's running if it is a tail dragger.

Edit: Just watched the video above. Assuming you are not going to install landing gear, be careful handling it. Remember, it may be slippery from the residual oil on your hands. Would suggest you install fuel tank close to the engine to minimize fuel draw issues.

Good luck.

I am curious as to the launch procedure for this baby. Does anyone have suggestions? Estabon did not show his launch.

With electric, the best way is to give it a toss motor off then power up after you let go. I have seen what a Cox engine will do to the hands when launching in a pusher config. I don't think I would want to do it myself.
Some have made a launching stooge so that no body parts would be directly involved when launching. I also recall there being a bungee used to help get airspeed and control quickly.

Just took the engine apart to test the glow head, it didn't glow at all. Turns out the battery I was using was dead.

New battery and it glows bright orange. Also, I was running WAYYY rich. I'm going to try in a little bit...

gcb, I have mounted the engine on a conventional forward mount. I am picking up my wings this weekend.

Where in San Jose are you intending on launching this little beastie?

I know a bunch of the Baylands guys are combating them.

You may be interested in these gloves - I use a righthanded one to start some of my snappier diesels - If you launch lefthanded you are welcome to my leftie? The rubber dip may help your grip also.

I fly at Bayside Rc, (www.baysidercclub.com)

I have a friend who usually launches my stuff for me, and is an expert with flying wings.

I am literally the only person who actually still has faith in these annoying sounding bees.

I had a friend try the first flight on that crazy conversion.

She lives!!!!!! (well just the motor)

Finally got the little bugger to start. Boy does it have ompf!!! These little guys have always scared the crap outta me. Seems to have more power than my old little surestart. Anyway, I can't wait to get this thing mounted on that wing!! Should be fun!

Btw, the wild wing has a 36 in wingspan.
