I think even regular anodizing would fix wear issues. Hard anodize would ensure that your grandchildren would still have a decent crankcase. The concern is that the side loads generated by running the gear are substantial compared to the side loads from props. I do have a spread sheet that calculates prop size for different gear ratios while keeping pitch speed the same as the direct drive prop.

The slickest looking geared set up I've seen is the Nelson .15 that is displayed at Doug Galbreath's site. So slick it is hard to tell how it is done.

I was going to say that dave, it is a good reduction setup, a little draggy in design, but very durable having 3 seperate planet gears.
