[] Norvel engines went on sale for the same price about a year before they stopped making engines.

How many did you buy at close out prices? Around 98/99 I was going to order a few for future R/C and C/L use. My now ex-wife was pregnant with my son and I was thinking ahead... too bad I never pulled the trigger. Now I'm seriously involved in Cox rebuilds since I do have that cigar box....

As long as I can find norvels for that price I have no desire for more project engines than I already have. The posts here and my experience with the CS FF and r/c diesel has shown me that China has a way to go before they are ready for the big boy club.

Lil' D, I bought just a few at $30 and they're toast now. [&o]
I'll bet the average Wasp makes it through 2 gallons of fuel? Over 120 flights? I've never kept track, but that is a gut feeling.
They have been great for RC Combat, for some years I was flying [and pitting 2 planes each match] dozens of 15-20 minute matches with just a couple of engines and a couple engines in reserve. Never ever broke anything but the crankshafts would eventually get too sloppy and leak pressure.

I've been told the Wasp has a lousy front crank bearing surface... i run lots of extra castor in my Sig because of those testimonials. I also bought an extra crankcase and keep meaning to run it over to Indy and have a friend who works at Allison see if he can make it more robust. But Ziggy usually has more important stuff to do on his '70 'Cuda.

I keep thinking I should try making a crankcase for Wasp guts.....maybe adding ball bearings and muffler mounting tabs. I wonder if a Toki muffler would be an appropriate size? The Toki muffler is nice and lightweight (even if the engine itself is heavy).

DT, that would make a very nice engine project.
steve111, with a little elbow grease and JB WELD, you can do anything. The sides of the round AP carb would have to be filed flat to fit in the oblong Norvel hole. I've fit a couple of KK NVAs in AMEs by making aluminum adapters.

it that price i will buy a few i already have 2 with no problems i use lots of castor also have a few cs .061 and im happy they start easy after brake in the only problem no air blead in the carb i need to drill one so they idle better so after ap is gone whats left not much and im not going to spend a lot of money on electrics plenty of cox engines to last me and keep me flying for a while

The piston/liner fit seems to be plenty good enough. It's the crankshaft/case fit that's the main issue with 'em.
Making a carb body with an adjustable airbleed is a good point too.

I don't think they're ceasing production. HP is having a big engine sale:

The Magnum XLS .15 is $45, that's a good deal.

Just picked up another $30, never run, Big Mig .061 today at the Chessaning/Owosso swap meet.....
These engines are out there guys, you just have to look! I passed on another 4 used ones and easily a hundred Cox motors of different types.

The AP .061 is a crude lil bugger. How do they expect the back crankcase and the cylinder liner to seal against a rough cast surface? I took my AP .061 apart and sanded with 600 and 1500 grit on a glass plate the back of the crankcase opening and the top of the crankcase where the piston liner bolts to. Polished up real nice and I don't see any bubbles there anymore. I also polished up the front of the crankcase where the steel washer rides against.
It ran alot better but the glow plug burned out during the breakin. Was running too rich maybe? Will a Cox .049 glow head work? How about the head adapter they sell at kitting it together?

Good call on polishing the case for a better fit. Did your backplate not have a sealing O-ring?
You may also want to replace the O-ring between the carb and case. I usually cut a new O-ring from a piece of large silicone fuel tubing. The tubing is soft enough to provide a good seal against an uneven crankcase opening. The O-rings shipped with both the AP and NORVEL are many times too hard the seal well.

The backplate had the o-ring but the back of the crankcase was so porus that it couldnt seal well. Thank's for the carb o-ring trick. I may just go with the head from kitting it together. I am building a piece o cake for this motor.

That offer is not so extraordinar, here the same engine for only 4 more $ all year around: http://www.himodel.com/engines/AAP06...Airplanes.html
This is where I ordered mine and I have fitted it with the Galbreath head and Nelson medium plug and it truly runs just as good as my Norvel Big Mig. I use them both in a miniature 3-D plane and both throttle well and are dead reliable. The AP is powerful enough to hover the plane weighing 400 grams and still pull out straight up. I don`t fly this plane alot, so even if the AP only lasts for 2 gallons, I will not find out until a couple of years, and I would still be happy that I spent those 30$ on it and get another one. Afterall there`s not many alternatives, right
I remember that I promised a video of this project and I will try to get it done this weekend.
