Default Herr Cherokee ailron mods

Just thought I'd share some pictures of a herr Cherokee I'm building, this one has two wings, one is stock, the other is scratch built with ailrons, I decided to go with the barn door type ailrons because I figured it might fly a little better then if it had strip ailrons, so here's a few pictures, I had a friend help me out with the wing, I was impressed with how it came out sorry if the pictures are griany

Stuart,

I have this unbuilt kit. I like your idea of barn door ailerons. If I may ask, what engine are you planning to use? Also, are the
barn door ailerons solid balsa or built up? Thanks for your reply.

Hi Max,

the ailrons are soild stock, the engine I have in it as a Norval big mig .061, I'm not sure if it's going to be enough to fly it or not, I'll try it and see what happens, but if it ends up under powered, I'll swap it out for a ame .061

there is a bit of a weight difference between the stock wing and that one with ailrons ...so I'm going to try flying it with both wings and see where it gets me

Default cherokee ailerons

i also made the cherokee with ailerons
only thing is i made mine much longer for aerobatics
mine should litterally just flip in the air or i can fine tune it through the radio for less movement calming it down
i also see that you use a single servo
i used two servos making each aileron independent allowing me to double them as flaperons
lol

My only regret in building this kit when I put the ailerons on was forgetting to remove much of that dihedral. Its not needed if you use ailerons and your plane will fly MUCH better with less dihedral in the wing.

stock dehidrial will have the plane fight the ailerons
it will want to right itself all the time
not really a bad thing unless you want to fly upside down
lol

the aileron wing on my Cherokee had about half the dihedral taken out, I'm going to try to get some covering material picked up for it next week, I'm guessing at this point that it should be a pretty nice little flyer, thanks for your pictures and post

that's one nice thing about the herr kits
they are quick builders

nice to have these planes close by in case your looking for a quickie project
i gotta find more
lol
i have herr 180 started but it's idle at the moment
waiting for covering
this one is converted to water

Thanks to all posts with your good ideas about ailerons, dihedral, etc. I know about the dihedral matter but would no doubt have forgotten to reduce it. RCUniverse is a great idea.

I purchased the Herr Cherokee, along with most of the other Herr 1/2A RC kits, a few years ago when they cost about 50% of today's price. However, like most older modelers, I never seem to get around to building my kits including the Cherokee.
