If I'd got my hands on one of those as a kid I'd probably have run engines on my bench in the garage every day. As it was, I was happy that the spring starter could be used with ski mittens on since I tying whole planes down to the picnic table on the patio all the time anyhow. I didn't figure out how to make a test stand mount for about three years when I desperately needed a better way to learn about my first diesel.

It is cool. Wish I got one when I was kid. Instead I got a Wen Mac RTF airplane that I could hardly start, let alone fly.

Iwas lucky, my first was the Testors P-40 and it started and ran great. I flew it so much Iwore out the airframe and then used the engine on an all balsa profile kit.

How true!
When I was not able to go and fly my plane, I would go to the back yard and run mine. My grand father helped my fasten a board to a tree (we had no shop) so that it would function as a base for a mount and I bought an engine test stand and bolted it to that board.

What impressed me was that the engine was marketed here for no other use than just to run the engine. I guess after running it a few times, maybe even once, it would inspire a lad to put it on something and make use of the awsome power!
These days I just don't think it would go over well. The times, they are a changing...

Why would you sit and watch something mechanical make noise, stink up the place and get you all gooey when you could sit on your ass, have your mother bring you another round of cheese puffs and a 2 liter bottle of pop and kill people on the tv screen?

Course the fact that I left the house at 20 and never moved back in MAY have been an indirect result. Lets just wait another 10 years and see what the average age of the live in child adult is. I'm guessin 30-35, sitting down in the basement and yelling 'MOM, I need some more go go puffs!'

My wife gets mad when I start something up in the utility room. How else do you dust your hobby room?

I love starting something up inside. Even if for just a short run. It's so much warmer and more comfortable. Try it in the kitchen, its great.

I remember when the first Babe Bees hit my LHS. Previous Cox engines were in neat little boxes...the Babe Bees were bubble carded in a row so you could rip off the bottom one. I remember being impressed by the power.

The first plane I built for that Babe Bee was a "Bluetail Fly" from a magazine plan. I wasn't experienced enough to move the firewall back since it no longer needed an external tank like it had for my old used Thermal Hopper, so it was a bit nose heavy...still fun.

Guess I'd better finish this one first. Started it a few years ago, but something else came up. Forgot about it until this discussion. Dusted it off and took pics. Power is Atwood .049 on this one.

For those who may build it, the plans say 1/4" for wing tips, the isometric view says 1/16"-3/32"...I used 1/16" on all I built. Also, the original had some dihedral as an option. I built all mine flat. I think I built four or five of them. Darn things kept smacking the ground! [&o]

If you do not have the magazine, plans are available through AMA... #26144 (John Pond number 53F1).

George, does that Atwood have a standard 'short' glow plug, with the big hole for the coil? Do I see a thread starting on making a Nelson plug [with the small coil hole] fit in a new Atwood head? I have one of those somewhere, and it runs, too. I just don't remember when I ran it. The Atwood and the Cub were easier for the Grandson to start, as I remember.
