AP .061 trouble
I recently bought this engine new to put on my hob schoolyard cub. I am using a 2 once tank. The motor would not start with by flipping it over so I had to use a 1/2a starter. even with that, it would barely start. If i can get it to start, I have to hold the tank higher than the glow plug for it stay running. it seems to leak a lot of fuel out of the front of the case. the motor also seems sloppy. I talked to a customer at the hobby shop I work at and he said that he has gp .07s and really likes them, am I better off just buying one of those?
Thanks

From what I have read, yes, the TT .07 will serve you MUCH better! You may want to do some researching on both of these engines. I think that it will serve your curiosity well.

RE: AP .061 trouble
I have read up on the ap and people have had mixed reviews. I read in one thread to replace the head gaset with a cox one. My engine did not have a head gasket. I bought a cox overhaul kit, but It did not include a gasket that fit. I thought about powering the plane witih a cleaned up cox ss, but I liked the idea of a throttle.

Gto,
There is typically somethingwrong with the AP .061. Some are better than others. I will let others chime in on solutions to your specific problems. It always seems to be something, though.
Also, there areCox R/C SureStarts on the bay that you may be interested in. From the video that they advertise, they run very well, but I cannot vouch for that. Personally, if Iwanted an r/c .049, Iwould be willing to spend the money on one. That is just my opinion, though. Iknow that aNorvelcould beat itanyday.

RE: AP .061 trouble
For what it is worth, I prefer the AP over the TT07 GP...
I don't understand your problem, sounds like there is an obstruction for the fuel, how far out do you have the needle and what fuel are you using? Have you check for a blockage in the pressureline from the exhaust?
Check the head gasket too, you can easily make a new one out of aluminium from a can.
I use a springstarter (homemaid from musicwire) on mine, the engine even has the little hole in the case for the spring. Seems they just copied Norvel completely but didn't bother to make any starter springs.
The crank to case is sloppy (too sloppy for my taste) but with 20% all castor it seem to work. The TT 07 is just as sloppy, so there is no gain there. Maybe the early Norvels , that were a bit tight, scared the manufacturers into making them way too sloppy... Or maybe they just don't care, who knows...

RE: AP .061 trouble
I am using hobbico 1/2a fuel, and have the needle about 2 1/2 to 3 turns out from fully shut as reccomended by the instructions. I also am having problems with the end of the muffler falling off. This engine has been somewhat frustrating compared to the other half a stuff I have. Does anyone know if this plane will even fly with a sure start? It has a 52 inch ws.

RE: AP .061 trouble
The muffler is easily fixed with a bit of JB weld on one of the to parts. After curing simply sand to a snug fit and it will stay in place, this will also ensure an even pressure from the pressure feed. A quicker solution is to JB weld the things together permanently...
I've also put some JB weld on the muffler section facing the engine to get a better seal.
I've spent much less time on my AP engine then I have on the TT07, and I shouldn't even mention the CS engine...
If you have a good piston and liner in your AP there can only be a minor fix to have it going well, I would think. I would recommend full castor in the fuel, I don't know what the hobbico has in it. I'm now running 20%castor and 10%Nitro, needle setting is around two turns open and then it runs really rich. I would trust the actual turns though, if it is too lean simply undo the needle more!
When the needle falls of you'll know that you have fuel blockage... (been there myself)
What is the weight of the plane?

RE: AP .061 trouble
Thats kind of what I thought. On a side note, I took the motor off the plane and dissamsembled and inspected it. I found some traces of lapping/finnishing compound in it, and a few metal boogers. Ifound a cox head gasket at the hobby shop, and installed it. The cleaning and gasket worked, and the engine can now be started by flipping it, and runs reliably. I still have to set up and hing the tail feathers, before I can try the plane. I may end up just putting a .10 on it and using the .061 on a lady bug. Thanks for your help, it definitely helped get my motor up and running.

Why is it that Enya will not bring the 06 back? I have Emailed Ken and it just seems that everyone thinks 1/2 A is dead. NOT SO!

RE: AP .061 trouble
I'd just got to Ebay and get one of the $40 NIB Norvels that have been selling in the last week or two.
There are plenty of brand new 1/2A's out there, anything that was ever sold is still available. Go get you some 1/2A!
