Default 1/2a Biplane

Hello all,

Well building season is almost upon me. Really want to build a 1/2a Biplane. Any ideas. Might design one and build it. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Honker1

The Herr Pits needs a 15. It was designed for the Norvel 074 but it's not quite up to it. ACE doesn't make them any more but their Simple Ultimate is a good one. It too performs better with a 15. There are some crazies that put 25's on the poor thing.

There was a biplane designed some years back called the Skaliwag. Can't remember who designed it. Plans are probably still available from Select Hobbies.

No Plans, I sold it to Flying Models.

I went to the Flying Models website to get the plan # and was saddened to learn Hal Carstens has passed away. Sure hope the family keeps the rag alive.

The plan # is CD220. http://www.flying-models.com/

If it was my "Bud Light" Cloud Ranger on Youtube you can find some more info on it here in the 1/2a forums to include AUW with an OS .10LA. I just flew that plane last weekend and it still draws attention and surprise at how fast it is. PM me if you want some tips as to what I would do different if I were to build it again.

Jeffie,
Will Sig let you tour their facility now?
I stopped by around 5 years ago with my two daughters and
was told they don't allow it.
How did they appear to be doing?
Thanks!

They have a bunch of planes hanging from the ceiling in the reception area, that is where the bipe I was referring to is. Along with many others.

Sig is up and running and doing awesome. Kit sales are at an all time high !! They had trouble getting stuff like the nitro shortage we all saw a while back, that has been taken care of. Also there is a balsa shortage due to the fact that those wind turbines use balsa inside the blades, that has been also been taken care of. The owner had a heart attack this summer but he is doing fine. And it appears China is sitting on a bunch of ARFs trying to get them to cough up more money for them since the dollar has dropped in value, despite them being built under contract.
If you come to the plant during the yearly open house they give tours daily. Ihave seen some of the stuff under development and it rocks.

I found some free prints in this forum last winter and built a stick bipe. I put it on the back burner after finishing it, but recently installed servos and an OS .15LA that I had laying around. Should be grotesquely overpowered, but it does have a throttle. I bet it would fly fine with an .074.... -Craig

Thanks all,

Keep it going. I just ordered plans for the Skaliwag, should be good. Still think I might design a Bipe. Definately 1/2a, I have been successful in modifying Surestarts to get around 21K with a 5X3.

I was thinking a loose Jenny, SE5 , Moth. Slow, light....

Any thoughts on max wing area, wingspan, airfoil (Clark Y)? I have a feeling once I design one it might really open the flood gates.

Most likely Ill be started a build thread on it.

Question about the Pitts for yall. Would it handle an OS FS .30?

How about this one? Nice airfoil section; it might even thermal after the engine quits.

Hey Skaliwag,

You think a screaming Surestart will haul this thing around?

Another E-kit you could convert is the Radical RC Das Mini Bipe. Radical R/C's kits are very nice laser cut and almost fall together. Very rugged design, only the firewall should need modifications for glow.

That's my design. Originally powerd with a TT .07, it currently has a Norvel .074 which provides oodles of power.

I've designed a few 1/2A bipes, so if you have any questions...

Hey Bipe, is that ultimate yours or a kit? and what engine is it?...I have one of the ACE ultimate kits nib, only a few of the ace kits have been user friendly to me, and having hardly flown this year a bipe is not even on the build list, but I hope to do better next year...Rog

All the pictures above are my own plans. The Ultimate was from one of the design contests and has a Norvel AME .061.

I had an ACE Ultimate and it flew very well, despite the weight.
