Every now and then I see something that just catches my eye, either in the picture or the decription that just does not seem to fit.

See if you see what I saw. Like many engines that are offered many times thyey are sold by sellers that have no real idea what they have or if they are any good! This one was listed:
"VTG TOP FLIGHT PROPELLER & MODEL AIRPLANE ENGINE 50s?"
Along with this common disclaimer:
" This engine is sold in "as is" condition because I have no way of testing it."

So would you bid on this? If not why?

only if it was cheap and I was looking for a few parts - like the larger tank. The case has a bulge on it reminiscent of a broken rod at some time, or something like that.

Yep - parts only. Looks like lower end got a little too big before it quit.

The only parts I'd trust are
the prop screw, prop plate
and tank back plate.
The tank doesn't look great and
that's not even an old style needle. []

Thanks guys, This one sold for fifteen dollars, about right I guess for someone who is optimistic. I doubt any of the regulars here would have bid that high. Most Golden Bees go for a lot more normally. Probably the shiny gold color. I remember when I bought my first Cox engine I asked the LHS owner which he reccomended between the Black Widow and the GB, he said that the BW was more powerful and they were very close in price but I chose the GB. Mostly for its looks even though the BW was what he reccomended! I was distracted by a pretty shiny object! I did like the BW's packaging over the GB what with that really cool black widow spider and all, still...

At first glance, this one doesn't look too bad but that case mark shows itself rather well and the pictures were better than others.
Agreed, it wouls be good for parts and does have a prop and spinner wheras some don't. Bid I would say yes but not as though I would be choosing it for a runner.

For us who know better it pretty much is a no brainer but for a newbee who doesn't it would likely be a huge dissapointment once in hand.

Again thanks guys and yes this thread was meant to be educational as I had no intention of bidding on this one.

Robert, the Golden Bee had single bypass porting which has less power but probably better handling. The BW was essentially a upgraded Golden Bee. I think Larry Renger said the originals had a TD piston/cylinder for performance.

Here are my Golden Bees:

The upper left one has a BW tank, added muffler, and replacement needle.

The lower right one has a replacement needle.

I think the other two are stock. Note how the lower left one has faded anodizing.

These were all bought from ebay and I have no idea what cylinders were used on GB's over their cycle.

There has been a few different shades of "Golden Bee " gold/yellow over the years. As a matter of fact there was one batch anodized that had a pale pink tint. Once and a great while you will come across one of them.

I have a few golden bees.
All have the number 2 cylinder with single bypass.
Some with sub port induction and some without.
Heavy wall, thin wall and one externaly ground
with an exhaust restriction throttle.
Oh, the last one has dual bypass and huge s.p.i.(go figure)
Crankcases with small taper,large taper and no taper.
Two with the "W" element glo head.
Mostly black prop backplates, but two are bare aluminum.
All are round.
Plenty of mix and match over the years I guess.
Probably my favorite Cox engine overall.
