Default Foam wings, or I had a dream!

I love elliptical wings, I love foam core wings, the two rarely come together. I was thinking about how to make a foam elliptical wing, I had a lot of ideas, but it would take lots of jigging and work. I when to bed and when I woke up I had it figured out...........

If you just want an elliptical wing and don't want to cut foam, the wing from a Scoundrel is a fantastic wing, in fact it's the best handling wing I've built for a small plane.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.[sm=lol.gif]

It's really easy:
First I cut the top of the core, then I took and cut a straight line across the bottom of the left side to the top of the right side. The airfoil's shape gets elongated, so it's not a true elliptical wing but it sure looks like it. To change the shape of the wing you change the airfoil. This gives you a flat bottom airfoil, but if you put two of them together it's a symmetrical airfoil. I'm not a fan of symmetrical airfoils, I don't fly upside-down halve of the time, with the little stuff I really enjoy floaters.

Very nice Rich. It's cool when you go to sleep thinking about something and awake with the solution. Another way to do it is to use an airfoil for the root template and a straight line for the tip. On a thin airfoil there isn't much of an elliptical shape, but you can trim it and sand a bit.

It's purdy but it's also a purdy radical taper ratio. unfortunetly I foresee much tip stalling and unexplainable snap rolls out of higher G turns and pullups from using this shape.

Instead of a straight line taper of the bottom what about a long curved pair of guide templates for the bottom cut so the wing stays wider out to a further point and then curves inward more quickly at the tip?

I had one of those, and woke up with a great idea for applying wing sheeting.

The Dreamwing is sheeted. I used 1/16" balsa to sheet it with 3m77 as the glue, then used a piece of TE for the dihedral setting piece, 7* dihedral is what I like to use and this sets it perfectly everytime. I'll now glass the joint with two layers of .75oz glass cut on a 45* bias, with an extra layer where the wing bolt will go.

Now I got to come up with a fuse and tail feathers.

One picture is the wing with the bottom sheeting applied, the other is the wing joined.

So simple and good looking.

A little wider root chord and it would be a sweet P-38 wing!

I glassed the center section, then faired the glass in with lightweight spackling compound.

I silked the wing, then 4 coats of clear, 2 of sanding sealer, then two more clear. It looks pretty good now. Now for the fuse, I think it's going to be Baby Bee powered.
