I have found it is best to do a coat or two of nitrate dope first, then follow it with butyrate, for better adhesion to the fibers.

Randolphs is not much different than sig's and I have heard Brodak's dope is Randolph's. Randolphs works very well.

I don't think the issue is the brand, it is butyrate vs. nitrate. Nitrate has a reputation for giving better adhesion. I used doped Polyspan on one plane and liked it very much. I'm pretty sure I used nitrate for the first two coats. It sounds like the post above comes from experience, but I would be interested in hearing how butyrate worked, or didn't, as a base coat. Sig says butyrate is fine directly on Koverall, so I'd expect it to be OK on Polyspan too, but I haven't tried it.

Butyrate was all I knew after we started using alkahol fuels.
I covered many planes with silk , nylon , and silkspan using
nothing but butyrate. Being poor and living close to a small
town airport a sympathetic group saw to it that we had all
the dope we needed. They were not considered pushers in
those days. Planes were heavy but fun.

I've used Polyspan with Randolph Butyrate dope and almost all my competition Free Flight planes including 1/2A planes and 96" Lanzo Bombers, A SAM type old timer plane.
No problem at all and it's a fantastic covering product. I use a foam brush available in Walmart for brushing it on.
