Another Kadetito Build
I got these plans from a guy at the field (I was raving about my 20 year old Senior and how it's never been crashed and he offered them up).
I had planned to go electric, but I'm building this one for my dad and He wanted nitro. I did some research and picked up a Big Mig .074 from www.nvengines.com. This engine is awesome...I can't wait to run it...it's just a really cool little piece of engineering. Anyway...here are some pics of the build: My boy and I hamming it up: http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...6-15185736.jpg Setting dihedral: http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...6-21142257.jpg Sheeting: http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...6-22103041.jpg Done and ready for sanding: http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...6-23083747.jpg I'm building from the plans and my limited building experience. So far all is well...I'm sure I've messed some stuff up, but nothing critical. I can't wait to get this in the air. The Norvel engine really has me stoked...and I'll be building more 1/2A planes now that I know there is a quality power option that's NOT electric (no offense, I have many electrics, but I do love nitro more:)). |
RE: Another Kadetito Build
Here's a pic of the engine (though I know most of you have seen one before...):

Lookin' good sirzepp!! |
RE: Another Kadetito Build
Looks great so far Sirzepp, plan on a 2oz tank and a master airscrew 7X3 prop for that. You'll be flying at 1/2 throttle most of the time anyway. When setting up the throttle linkage, note that foward is idle and it pulls back for full throttle (you won't see because of the screen.)
|
RE: Another Kadetito Build
Not sure sirzepp's motor has a throttle.

RE: Another Kadetito Build
Actually they do offer the .074 in a CL model now, but Andrew is correct, Sirzepp's is the RC version.

RE: Another Kadetito Build
I haven't gotten much done lately...we are moving this week. Chances are it will be a week or so before I get back to it. I hope to have her in the air soon, though, as it was SUPPOSED to be a father's day gift to my dad (LOL!).

RE: Another Kadetito Build
So sirzepp, Monitoring and awaiting news. Don't forget to go by posting the step by step |
RE: Another Kadetito Build
Sorry...I have been swamped with work and moving....all done now, though. I should be making some progress this weekend.
|
RE: Another Kadetito Build
Finally got the airplane room all set up and started back in on the Kadetito:
Horizontal and Elevator framed up: http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...6090031539.jpg Starting on the fuse: http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...6090013502.jpg Progress should be fairly steady as we have finished moving and setting the new house up (I had to build a work bench and shelving in the garage so it's been a whirlwind of a move). |
RE: Another Kadetito Build
I have not bought materials, but in keeping with its construction.
Look good. Do not forget to post photos of progress. Have you considered how you will be covering '. |
RE: Another Kadetito Build
I'm just going to cover in Ultracote. I can't seem to find a lighter option that's also fuel proof...supposedly parklite, solite, solarfilm and the like are not fuel proof. If you all have better information I'd love to hear!
|
RE: Another Kadetito Build
Now you got me flea behind the ear.:D I thought about using the coverite microlite : http://www.coverite.com/covering/covq0240.html |
RE: Another Kadetito Build
I'm not sure your microlite is fuelproof. Check around, or test it first. I used coverlite and liked it very much. Easy to apply using basla rite, light, fuel proof, and takes paint nicely.

RE: Another Kadetito Build
I HATE painting...so any finish that requires paint is out for this one. On the other hand, I've found a bit of talent/enjoyment in using film...so it's got my vote right now...despite it's weight.
|
RE: Another Kadetito Build
I hate painting too, and wanted something like the original painting of the "Kadet Senior" or seniorita with red transparently and is lightweight
I'll investigate further. coverite 1800 = Weight: 1 oz/sq yd (28 g/sq m) coverite 0240 = Weight: 0.6 oz per square yard (18-22 g/m²). monokoteTOPQ0304 = Weight 0.2 oz/sq ft (61g/m²) |

Looks like transparent Ultracote is .12 oz per sq.
|
RE: Another Kadetito Build
ORIGINAL: sirzepp Looks like transparent Ultracote is .12 oz per sq. How good is the discussion. Now I decided that I will ultracote of the weight is very light too. Weight: 0.12 oz per square ft (36,6 g/m²). http://www.hangar-9.com/Products/Def...ProdID=HANU966 |
RE: Another Kadetito Build
Oh No! The "Leekies" have gotten into your head. :D One of my favorite sayings is that "Life is about perspective." In the days of yore, we built 1/2a kits that were 1/8" slab sided with doublers! These tanks were built to survive the appocolypse. Into these we squeezed another 6 to 8oz of the era's radio gear. Then we took these 1 1/2 to 2lb behemoths, stuck a cox baby bee on the nose and tossed them in the air. They flew!
Today my radio gear with servos, battery, and reciever weigh about what one of the old servos weighed. If I hear someone speaking of lightweight covering it is usually for a 16" span micro electric. Over the years I have covered with tissue, silkspan and silk. Painted too. In the last 10 years I have covered all my 1/2a planes with Ultracote. I goes on easier, has less chance of warping the wings, and is 3 to 4 times stronger so if my plane bounces around a bit in the car or on a less than perfect landing I don't have to fix holes. Is it heavier? Yes, but in weight measured in grams. If it is that critical you need a bigger motor. In this case a Norvel .074 would fly that plane fine with the old gear. If it worries you, spend $11 for a 400mah battery from Radical RC and save 2oz! That's enough to cover crashing the plane six times and rebuilding sections with epoxy and lite ply and still be under weight! Spend more time flying and less time covering! Just my 2 cents. |
RE: Another Kadetito Build
Then
The idea of using ultracote is good. My idea is to use ultracote transparent.. I using this ultracote not have problems.Am I right? http://www.hangar-9.com/Products/Def...ProdID=HANU966 |

Given the size of most of the 1/2A planes, a little calculation on the area to be covered will show that covering weight is really fairly insignificant - in many cases, less than .5 oz. Like Bill posted, simply choosing a different battery pack or tank will usually make much more difference in weight than using a different covering. |
RE: Another Kadetito Build
I agree, but this model airplane is an area of approximately =1.5m² = 16sqft
monokoteTOPQ0304 Weight = 0.2 oz / sq ft (61 g / m²) = 90grs=3,17oz. ultracote Weight: 0.12 oz per square ft (36.6 g / m²). = 54.9 grs=1,94oz. (90 -54.9) = 35.1 grams = 1.2 oz. |
RE: Another Kadetito Build
Good information here, thanks guys. I'll be posting more pics of progress. I've been on the road working...but will be home tomorrow. Perhaps I'll have a couple of hours to work on the plane over my next 3 days at home.

RE: Another Kadetito Build
Finished framing up the first side.
Now on to the second. The familiar photocopy construction method for truss fuselages...weeee! http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...5174533500.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...5191344224.jpg |
RE: Another Kadetito Build
Looking good, sirzepp. I have a question about the dihedral in the wing. I am working on a Kadetito also and on the plans I have there is no actual figure for the amount of dihedral. Measuring the angle of the dihedral brace with a protractor I get 9.5 degrees. Is there a figure on the plans you have?

well,
In my plan, the only existing picture is the one below. It found a measure of 5 ° or 10 ° in total |
RE: Another Kadetito Build
Thanks, carlosam.
|
RE: Another Kadetito Build
I just used the dihedral brace to set up my wing...basically the TLAR method. We will see how she flies.
|
RE: Another Kadetito Build
I expect you'll be OK with the dihedral, sirzepp. I checked a model design book I have, and for a trainer, an angle of 6-8 degrees was specified for 3 channel trainers. Think I'll go with 9 degrees. A little bit either way probably won't matter.

RE: Another Kadetito Build
Fuse sides done:
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...7181555077.jpg Fuse assembly: http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...2100010192.jpg I made my first big screw up above (there have been a few little ones). I used a 1/4 inch ply firewall...for some reason my brain was convinced it was the right size (1/8")...I've had a lot on my mind lately and even though it looked too big...I installed it without reassessing. So now I can but a 30cc gasser on the front of my kadetito. Dear Lord, I think I'm going insane. Anyway, it shouldn't matter TOO much, I'll just move the battery back. The bummer is, I'm using an ultra light LiFe battery, and I just counteracted that weight savings...lol. But I am too lazy to fix it. Mocked up: http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...2104349810.jpg |
RE: Another Kadetito Build
That's right, work calmly Everything seems perfect until now Watching.... |
RE: Another Kadetito Build
Fuse is nearly complete. Just a few more things to do.
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...3172656536.jpg Still have to build the vertical stab and rudder, then it's time to prep and cover. |
RE: Another Kadetito Build
Vertical stab and Fuselage are done. Gotta build the rudder then sand and cover. Almost there!
