Anybody interested in a little Biplane?

Iam contemplating to order some 'Zaunkoenig' 1/2 A planes from Germany. The shipping makes it very expensive for just one,
but the price to ship three is the same as for one.
So this kit would cost around $45 each plus shipping from Reedsburg, WI or local pickup. I don't make any money on it, just don't need 3

When I can sell at least one, I'll put the order in.

I see the picture didn't upload, so here are some:

http://www.google.de/search?q=zaunk%...00&bih=789

this came out in the 70s and was quite popular over there. The kit can be build for glow or electric motors

Quite different to the real Zaunkoenig then, which is/was a high parasol wing T-tail STOL aircraft originally produced in 1939. The real one makes a nice flying scale model, too.
Your biplane model looks similar to a Hacker RTF/ARTF from a few years back-but Hacker were a Czech company IIRC.

Similar aren't they?

Yes, they look very similar,

I didn't know the Hacker version. The shape of the fuselage is a little different though.
As far as I know Simprop was the first to sell these.

And they stopped selling these in the 90s , some smaller kit cutters started to make them again just recently.

This has nothing to do with the full scale plane. A 'Zaunkoenig' is a small bird, translates into 'fence king'

Hacker 'Funny'-yes that's the one MJD-I couldn't remember its name earlier-but the current 'Zaunkoenig' rang a very familiar bell when I saw the pics.......

I always rejected it as being a bit too odd looking, one of those quirky looking overly boxy things that in truth probably flies great, but that never leaped out at me as something that I really wanted. But looking at it again now, if I came across a kit I'd probably grab it and have a go. And with today's affordable, quality small radio gear you can build lighter than we ever dreamed of two decades ago, so it probably can do its thing better than ever before, whatever that thing may be.

I am not much of a 1/2 A guy, have one HOB Me 109 which I didn't fly yet.
But this little plane looks fun to me, it's probably a little twitchy, some expo should tame it.

Sure it's not for beginners, you had to keep an eye on it.
But it should be fun to build and I like how it looks.

RE: Anybody interested in a little Biplane?

I bought a kit a couple of months ago and if it's the same kit we're talking about I can recommend it. I'm not experienced enough to comment balsa quality, but it appears to be of good quality. The fit of the parts is good and all the balsa you need is in the package. The only, (very tiny) bit negative is that I would have benefited from a building instruction, but I don't think anyone who has built a kit or two before needs one.

There are not many movies of Zaunkönigs on the tube, but if you search for "zaunkönig cox" you'll find some. This is the one I like best (so far) and which convinced me to build one : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaiD...e_gdata_player (I hope the link works, I'm copy-pasting on my phone).

The plane seems to fly ok.  Kind of fast without a throttle.  There is another video of one there that is similar.  Useless reedy motors on both.  Plane looks good with maybe a throttled Norvel .049, AP .06 or something. (leckie? nooo, well maybe)

RE: Anybody interested in a little Biplane?

I'd be interested. I'm always interested in having planes that aren't common and, since I have over 40 .049s that need homes, put me down for one at $45.

I'll put the order in now.

Tim, you can have one.
Now I need to decide if I use an elctric motor or get a Cox...

I scratch built one and put a G-Mark .3 on it. Flew fine.

RE: Anybody interested in a little Biplane?

Hmmn-a G-Mark 03 sounds a good fit for the model-and you have a nice effective throttle as well.....skaliwag-if you scratch built one, where did you find the plan?

Don't remember... I do remember it was in German. I'm thinking I had to tile it together.

OK I might have a look on hippocket and outerzone and the like and see if I can turn it up...........no big drama if I can't-my new project ideas run about 5 years ahead of my actual building program anyway...!

RE: Anybody interested in a little Biplane?

There exists a copy plans and building instructions of the Simprop version of Zaunkönig on a German site, but since I have no knowledge of the copyright status of the files I won't link to them here. That is - of course - unless someone with a better knowledge can say it's OK?

The plane is alot like my 16" Cannon Shot, by Ken Willard, but with a cabin. I mod-ed my to be 4 channel with 4 ailerons (originally it didn't have ailerons),and used a Eflite 250. It's quick and great tohave athrottle. I used expo's on it to tame it down on the center. It rolls fast and does tight loops, when I want it to. A fun planeto fly.
The plans are a free download.
