Royal 1/2A Ki-43 Oscar
 

Since Royal Products didn't make a 1/2A Oscar like many of their other 1/2A WWII kits, I decided to make one for EP flight. First thing I always do is look for parts I don't want to make; cowls, canopies, etc. I found an Airborne Models cowl from their 39" Zero, Great Planes P-47 EP canopy and prebent 1/2A landing gear. I based the size of this model on the cowl and reduced the Royal plans to fit. I've cut out all of the lite ply and balsa parts and started one of the wing panels.

Yes, the ARF replacement parts are a great source of of little bits
and pieces like that.
The Japanese fighters, unfortunately, are mostly overlooked by modelers.
(except for the Zero perhaps)

I like the Zero, but too many kits out there. I also like WWII fighters with bubble type canopies and the Oscar is a better looking airplane than the Zero.

They were both Badass in thier own right though.. That size Oscar you're making is a Great size.. the HOB 1/12 scale is perfect for any field. been flyin the 51 alot..Gosh that Oscar would look so cool chasing it....:D<div>

Here is the fuselage and horizontal stab with elevator. At least with the parts made, it's starting to resemble something of an aircraft. Now I'm getting to the finishing part; I've started sanding, added hinges and completed sheeting fuse. I will update this project as I continue this build.

I built their Corsair years ago and it is a very tough model. The construction involves a lot of bracing. It is not a light model!!!!! We have an Enya .09 for it.

Yes, Royal kits have lots of wood and weight, that's why it's better to scratch build for EP models. I reduced weight where I could, I didn't use much balsa block or fully sheet the wings. I built the Royal Cessna 172 and didn't care for the carving of wood, but they are nice kits with great quality balsa and make good flying models.

Still working on Oscar. I have everything sanded and starting to cover parts. Here are more photos. I'm using TF Super Monocote flat dove gray and flat olive drab as primary colors. This model may still come out looking half way decent and hopefully flies well too.

I LOVE this plane. Do you have a PDF of the plans? Or do you know where I can get a copy? I have the ability to print it any size I want at work from a PDF. This looks like a lot of fun to build.

Hi Tim,

I only know of hard copies of these plans. If you are looking to build the original .60 size version, I can hook you up with plans, cowling and canopy. If you want to build the reduced EP size that I'm building, then full size plans need to be reduced by 33%.

Finally finished with covering, will be finishing the final assembly next. I plan on using Hitec HS-81 servos for elevator and rudder and HS-125mg servos for ailerons. Right now for power, I'm thinking about using an Eflite 10 EP motor.
