Cox Radial
:DI built this cox radial a while back, it runs and idles well. 9500rpm with a 9/4 prop, idle 2200 rpm, 270 gram`s weight, 4"OD over plugs, and it is not a geared radial.

Here you go guys. Ralph lives in the area and sent me this picture a couple weeks ago. He had trouble posting the pic so I've posted it for him. I asked him for some details and here's what he sent. "The engine has a single throw crank and a master rod, it weighs much less than a G-Mark 30, 200 grams less , it also has a 1" dia blower on the back side for the fuel induction."
I'm hoping he'll take it apart and post some detailed pics of the inner goodies. |

That's ingenious, but 200 grams less? That's almost 1/2 a pound. The G MARK 30 must have been quite a chunk.

Thanks for the look at the G MARK. Forgot about those steel liners and it was probably gear driven? A little extra steel here and there can quickly add up. If the weight difference was just about aluminum, then it would take quite a lot to equal 200 grams.

I would love to see someone actually produce a KIT for these engines they are always posting pics of. Maybe a crankcase and rod, you get your own cyl, pistons, carb etc. and assemble it.

I tried to give you a ring earlier but didn't get an answer. I actually grew up just down the road from you in Oxford. Some of my friends grew up in Crockett and Como. I know that whole area very well. I love the idea of the engines and I would love to hear more about your plans. Do you know Dr Fox who runs the hobby shop in Oxford? He has some rare treasures in that shop, lots of rare kits. I always make it a point to stop by an see Doc whenever I am there.

As far as the G Mark 30 radial, a few observations if you please.
It was beautifully made but weighed too much thats a given. Got a new one at the WRAMS show from AHC back in the 80's and mounted it to run. Made the appropriate plug harness and got everything ready to start. Took bets to see how many pulls it would take to start. It had a very strange feeleing as you pulled the prop through. Remember it is a geared motor and as such does not have a definite compression cycle. At any rate after the appropriate bets, cynicism, et al I primed it and believe it or not it went on the first flip. Has a sound like a wankel or a good sewing machine, take your pick. The throttle response was good too. Fuel was always 20% nitro/25% castor . Now the bad part. It was mounted on a Kinner Sportster that was made especially light and just for this motor. Truth is the motor doesn'tt have the power to get out of it's own way. Went through a lot of different props, trying to improve the static thrust of the little critter but it never did manage to fly the plane with any sort of authority. If you have one they are probably appreciating in value and thats all right, but don't be tempted to buy one and use it on a plane. You will be disappointed. Dennis |

Ralph brought his engines to my Warbird fly-in a couple weeks ago and they are truly amazing! Especially the .049 radial. It runs very smooth and seems to have a lot of power. Just thought I'd let you guys know. Bill

Yup, I saw one of his radials run over at the Tullahoma S.M.A.L.L. and it was very cool indeed. It idled down well and had good throttle response. 3 of them running at the same time oughta be a real mind-blower.

So how does Ralf keep up crankcase pressure? Isn't that one of the great difficulties of 2-stroke radials? Great stuff.
